Q.1 A 3.66m long vertical cantilever having 0.1m nominal diameter standard steel pipe supports a 23130
N weight attached at the tip as shown in figure 1. The properties of the pipe are: Outer diameter =
0.114m, Inner diameter = 0.102m, thickness = 0.006m, moment of inertia = 3x10-6 m4, Elastic
Modulus = 2x 1011N/m2, weight = 157N/m. Determine the peak deformation and bending stress in
the cantilever as per IS code. Assume the damping as 2%. [Ans: 0.556m, σ = 56.76 N/m2]
Q.2 The stress computed in Q.1 exceeded the allowable stress and the designer decided to increase the
size of the pipe to a 0.2m nominal diameter standard steel pipe. Its properties are: Outer diameter
=0.22m, Inner diameter = 0.2m, thickness = 0.008m, Moment of inertia = 3x 10-5m4. Comment on
the advantages of using the bigger pipe.
Q.3 A small one storey RC building, located on sloping ground as shown in figure 2 is idealized for
purpose of structural analysis as a massless frame supporting a total dead load of 45kN at the beam
level. The beam is much stiffer than the columns and can be assumed to be rigid. The cross section
of the two columns are 0.25m square but their lengths are 3.66m and 7.32m respectively. Assume
that the Young’s modulus of concrete is 2x 1010 N/m2 and the damping ratio for the building is
estimated as 5%. Determine the base shears in the two columns at the instant of peak responses as
per IS Code.

Q.4 Compute the natural frequency in the side sway for the frame shown in figure 3. If the initial
displacement is 30 mm and the initial velocity is 30mm/s, compute the displacement at T = 2secs.
Take EI = 30x 1012 Nmm2. [Ans: ω= 1.856 rad/s, u= 34.03mm]
Q.5 In an experiment to determine the damping characteristics of a system, a viscously damped mass of
3kg undergoes a resonant amplitude of 1.4m with a period of 0.25s, when subjected to a
harmonically excited force of 245.25N. Calculate the damping coefficient. [Ans: c = 6.867Ns/m]
Q.6 A source of vibration with frequency 300Hz is to be isolated from an equipment of mass 15Ns 2/m.
What will be the specification of spring if 50% of vibration needs to be transmitted? Consider 5%
damping. [Ans: k= 17.76x 106N/m]
