Peer Review for Compare/Contrast Essay

1. Read your paper to your partner. Stop anytime you SEE or HEAR an error with your
grammar, word choice, spelling, and overall flow.

2. Have your partner also stop you at any point if they HEAR a problem in order to ask a
question, clarify a point, or make a suggestion. Write down their questions or suggestions
in a different color ink or pencil on the paper.

3. Switch jobs and repeat

4. Does the paper meet the requirements of the assignment?

a. Does it describe the characteristics of the subcultures?

b. Does the paper compare and contrast the two subcultures?

Now let’s look in more detail:

5. Does the introduction include an effective hook (first sentence)? If not, offer suggestions
on a possible way to interest the readers or how to improve the existing hook.

6. Ask the author to identify his or her thesis statement, and then answer these questions.

a. Is the thesis specific enough?

b. Does it include the points of comparison, the points of contrast, and the overall point
being made about the two?

c. Ask any questions or offer suggestions about the thesis statement

7. Next ask the author to identify his or her topic sentences.

a. Do they indicate what the main idea of the paragraph will be?
b. Do they connect back to the thesis statement?

8. Look at the main body.


a. Does each paragraph use at least one of the cultural theories in order to
compare/contrast?
b. Do the body paragraphs include specific examples from the subcultures?

9. Are there citations in each body paragraph? What main idea does the citation support?

10. For each citation, is there a reference at the end of the document? Are the references in
alphabetical order and in APA?

11. How is the paper organized?

a. Does the writer use point by point or block formatting?

12. Talk about the conclusion.

a. Does the paper summarize or restate what was already said?

b. Can you offer any suggestions on how it could be more interesting and more effective?
Does it say why the information in this paper is important?

13. Do you see any major grammatical errors or spelling mistakes? Use this website and
