SEMESTER 1, 2018/2019
ASSIGNMENT 2
Problem 1 (WP1)
Chairs from a particular supplier are analyzed for strength and ergonomics rating. The
results are summarized in the following table.
Ergonomics Rating
High Low
High 70 9
Strength
Low 16 5
Problem 2 (WP1)
An e-mail filter is planned to separate valid e-mails from spam. The word "free" occurs in
60% of the spam messages and only 4% of the valid messages. Also, 20% of the messages
are spam. Solve for the following probabilities:
(a) The message contains "free".
(b) The message is spam given that it contains "free".
(c) The message is valid given that it does not contain "free".

Problem 3 (WP1)
Given the following information in the following table.
x -2 -1 0 1 2
f(x) 0.2 0.4 0.1 0.2 0.1
a) Construct the probability mass function plot for X.
b) Solve for the following probabilities:
• P(X≤ 2) • P(X > -2) • P(-1≤ X ≤ 1) • P(X≤ -1 or X>1 )

Problem 4 (WP1)
A test instrument needs to be calibrated periodically to prevent measurement errors. After
some time of use without calibration, it is known that the probability density function of the
measurement error is f (x) = 1− 0.5x for 0 < x < 2 millimetres.
(a) If the measurement error within 0.5 millimetres is acceptable, solve for the probability
that the error is not acceptable before calibration.
(b) Solve for the value of measurement error exceeded with probability 0.2 before
calibration.
(c) Solve for the probability that the measurement error is exactly 0.22 millimetres before
calibration.
d) Construct the cumulative density function plot for the measurement error.

a) Construct the probability mass function plot for the wait time for service.
b) Construct the probability cumulative function plot for the wait time for service.
c) Solve for the mean and variance for the wait time for service.
(CO2, PO1, C3)
Problem 6 (WP1)
The thickness of a conductive coating in micrometers has a density function of 600x−2 for
100 µm < x < 120 µm.
(a) Solve for the mean and variance of the coating thickness.
(b) If the coating costs $0.50 per micrometer of thickness on each part, solve for the
average cost of the coating per part.
