Bar Based Problems
Bar Based Problems
Problems on bars :-
1. A circular rod of 12mm diameter was tested for tension . the total elongation on a 300 mm
length was 0.22 mm under a tensile load of 17 KN.Find the value of E
2. A rod 150 cm long and diameter 2.0 cm is subjected to an axial pull of 20KN .If the modulus
of elasticity of the material of the rod is 2x 10 5 N/mm2 ; determine :
i. The stress
ii. The starin
iii. The elongation of the rod
3. Find the young’s modulus of a brass rod of diameter 25mm and of length 250 mm which is
subjected to a tensile load of 50 KN when the extension of the rod is equal to 0.3mm
4. The safe stress , for a hollow steel column which carries an axial load of 2.01x 10 3 KN is 125
MN/m2 . if the external diameter of the column is 30 cm, determine the internal diameter ?
5. A stepped bar shown in the fig is subjected to an axially applied compressive load od 35
KN .Find the maximum and minimum stresses produced
6. An axial pull of 35000N is acting on a bar consisting of three lengths as shown in fig . If the
young’s modulus = 2.1 x 10 5 N/mm2 , determine :
i. Stresses in each section end
ii. Total extension of the bar
7. A member ABCD is subjected to point loads P 1 ,P2 ,P3 and P4 as ahown in fig below Calculate
the force P2 necessary for equilibrium, if P1 =45 KN ,P3= 450 KN and P4 = 130 KN. Detremine
the total elongation of the member , assuming the modulus of elasticity to be 2.1 x
5 2
10 N/mm
9. Find the modulus of elasticity for a rod, which tapers uniformly from 30mm to 15mm
diameter in alength of 350 mm .The ros is subjected to an axial load of 5.5 KN and extension
of the rod is 0.025 mm ?
