After Accomplishing This Module, You Must Be Able To

The document provides information about a General Mathematics module on rational equations. It contains 6 objectives for students to be able to distinguish, solve, and graph rational equations and functions. Examples are given of solving rational equations by finding a common denominator and simplifying. Students are then given practice problems to simplify and solve rational equations. The goal is for students to understand and work with rational equations.

GENERAL MATHEMATICS

Core Subject

Class No.: _____ Date: ______________________________

Name: ________________________________ Module 2.1 – 2nd Quarter – SY 2020 - 2021
Grade and Section: ______________________ Teacher: ___________________________

I. Title: RATIONAL EQUATIONS

II. Objectives:
After accomplishing this module, you must be able to:
1. distinguish rational equation and rational function.
2. solve problems involving rational functions; and
3. express logical thinking in finding the domain, range, intercepts and asymptote of
rational functions, and sketch its graph.

III. Material/s:
1. Calculator
2. For Reference/s: You may visit our Google Classroom for power point presentations
and sample computations.

IV. Time Frame: Week 5 Day 2 and Day 3

V. Concept:
WEEK 5 DAY 2 (Study the concept below, then proceed to part VI activity)
RATIONAL EQUATION is an equation that contains at least one fraction whose
numerator and denominator are polynomials.

Examples:
𝟗𝒙 𝟏
1. = – 3x
𝟏𝟑 𝟐
𝟕𝒙𝟐 +𝟑𝟖
2. =𝟏
𝒙𝟐 +𝟐𝒙+𝟔

A common way to solve rational equation is to reduce the fraction to a common

denominator then solve the equality of the numerators.

Example: Simplify each rational equation and solve for the value of x.
4𝑥 12
1. =
5 3
Step 1: Identify the LCD. 15
Step 2: Eliminate all the fractions. In this 4𝑥 12
case, divide the denominator by the LCD =
5 3
then multiply the quotient to the
numerator. 4𝑥 12
( = )15
5 3

12x = 60
Step 3: Solve the simplified equation. 12x = 60
Find the value of x, In this case divide
both sides by 12. 12𝑥 60
=
12 12

x=5

5𝑥 1 7
2. - =
6 2 3
Step 1: Identify the LCD. 6
Step 2: Eliminate all the fractions. In this 5𝑥 1 7
case, divide the denominator by the LCD - =
6 2 3
then multiply the quotient to the
numerator. 5𝑥 1 7
( - = )6
6 2 3

5x – 3 = 14
Step 3: Solve the simplified equation. 5x – 3 = 14
Find the value of x, in this case, divide
both sides by 5. 5x = 14 + 3

5x = 17

5𝑥 17
=
5 5

𝟏𝟕
x=
𝟓

𝑥 12 4−9𝑥
3. + =
3 𝑥+3 3𝑥+9
Step 1: Identify the LCD. 3(x + 3) or 3x + 9
Step 2: Eliminate all the fractions. In this 𝑥 12 4−9𝑥
case, divide the denominator by the LCD + =
3 𝑥+3 3𝑥+9
then multiply the quotient to the
numerator. 𝑥 12 4−9𝑥
( + = ) 3(x+3)
3 𝑥+3 3𝑥+9

x(x+3) + 36 = 4 – 9x
Step 3: Solve the simplified equation. x(x+3) + 36 = 4 – 9x
Find the value of x, in this case, multiply
x to x+3 then combine the similar terms. x2 + 3x + 36 = 4 – 9x

x2 + 3x + 9x + 36 – 4 = 0

Solve the factors of x2 – 6x + 32 = 0. x2 + 12x + 32 = 0

The factors are (x+8) & (x+4)
(x + 8) (x + 4) = 0

Equate each factor to 0(zero) x+8=0 x+4=0

x=-8 x=-4
