After Accomplishing This Module, You Must Be Able To

This document provides instruction on graphing exponential functions. It defines exponential functions and key terminology like domain, range, intercepts, and asymptotes. Examples are given of constructing tables of values and sketching the graphs of functions like f(x)=3x and f(x)=2x-4. Students are then asked to practice these skills by graphing additional functions on their own. The objectives are for students to distinguish exponential equations from functions, know how to find domains, ranges, intercepts, and asymptotes of exponential graphs, and be able to sketch the graphs.

Grade and Section: __________________________ Teacher: ____________________

I. Title: EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Graphing Exponential Functions)

II. Objectives:
After accomplishing this module, you must be able to:
1. distinguish exponential equation and exponential function
2. show logical thinking in finding the domain, range, intercepts and asymptote of
exponential functions, and sketching its graph, and
3. find the domain, range, intercepts, asymptote of exponential functions and sketch its
graph.

III. Material/s:

2. Any graphing calculator applications or software (i.e. GeoGebra, Desmos, Grapher
etc.) optional
3. For video references on graphing exponential functions, you may visit the following:

IV. Time Frame: Week 5 Day 1 and Day 2

V. Concept:
WEEK 5 DAY 1 (Study the concepts and examples below, then proceed to part VI Activity)
A. EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION is a function defined by f(x) = a, a is the base and x is
the exponent.
where: a> 0 and a ≠ 1

B. DEFINITION OF TERMINOLOGIES:
• Domain of an Exponential Function is the set of all real numbers; it is the first
coordinates in the ordered pairs of a function.
• Range of an Exponential Function is a set of positive real numbers; it is the
second coordinates in the ordered pairs of a function.
• Intercept (x and y – intercepts) is the point of intersection of the graph of a
function and an axis.
• Asymptote is an imaginary line that the graph of a function approaches but
never touches.

C. Illustrative Examples: Construct a table of values, sketch the graph and determine
the domain, range, intercepts, and horizontal asymptote of the following exponential
functions.
1) f(x) = 3x
Step 1: Construct the table of values
x 0 1 2 3 4 5
f(x) 1 3 9 27 81 243

Note: Solve f(x) by substituting the values of x to the given function. Ex. 3 0 = 1, 31 = 3…
Step 2: Sketch the graph by plotting the points obtained from Step 1

General Mathematics – Module 1 (First Semester, Second Quarter) Page 1 of 5

y

Step 3: Using the graph and table of values determine the domain, range,
intercepts and horizontal asymptote.

Domain (D) = {x|x ∈ 𝓡} The domain is the set of all real numbers as stated in the definition.
Range (R) = {y|y > 0} The range is the set of all positive number (numbers > 0) as stated in the
definition.
Intercepts:
x – intercept = none There is no x–intercept since the graph (curve) did not crossed the x – axis.
y – intercept = (0,1) (0,1) are the coordinates of the point where the graph (curve) intersected
the y axis.
Horizontal Asymptote =
y = 0 or x – axis Since the range of the function will not include 0 and numbers less than 0
then it will never reach the x – axis, thus it will never intersect nor touch it
making it the horizontal asymptote.

2) f(x) = 2x – 4
Step 1: Construct the table of values
x 0 1 2 3 4 5
f(x) 0.06 0.13 0.25 0.5 1 2
Note: Solve f(x) by substituting the values of x to the given function. Ex. 20-4 = 2 -4 = 0.06

Step 2: Sketch the graph by plotting the points obtained from Step 1
y

Step 3: Using the graph and table of values determine the domain, range,
intercepts and horizontal asymptote.

Domain (D) = {x|x ∈ 𝓡} The domain is the set of all real numbers as stated in the definition.
Range (R) = {y|y > 0} The range is the set of all positive number (numbers > 0) as stated in the
definition.
Intercepts:

General Mathematics – Module 1 (First Semester, Second Quarter) Page 2 of 5

x – intercept = none There is no x – intercept since the graph (curve) did not crossed the x
– axis.
y – intercept = (0,0.06) (0,0.06) are the coordinate of the point where the graph (curve)
intersected the y axis.
Horizontal Asymptote =
y = 0 or x – axis Since the range of the function will not include 0 and numbers less
than 0 then it will never reach the x – axis, thus it will never intersect
nor touch it making it the horizontal asymptote.
