11 – HUMSS 01
I. Rationale
This task helps the students to apply their learned skills in a real-life situation. It also
leads to the target of the performance standards of the subject to accurately construct
mathematical models to represent real-life situations using functions.

In this task, the students are able to perform concepts using mathematical models.
Students are expected to collaborate among the members of the group and present properly and
accurately the task that they have analyzed and found out.

The students should analyze the problem conceptually to demonstrate understanding

about mathematical model which they have learned.

III. PROBLEMS
Problem #1 – Baque, Jhon Paul B.
Love is studying at Adamson University but her mother and father can't support her
education, so Love decided to be a working student.
Love gets paid P100 an hour for working at Jollibee Taft. She wants to know how
many hours she must work to earn P11,600 to pay her tuition fee.
a) Write a function that relates the money which Love earns (m) and the number of
hours (h) that she works.
b) Using the function, how many hours she must work to earn P11,600?

Solution:
Let m be the money and and h be the hours

m(h)= 100h
11600 100 h
=
100 100
h = 116 hrs

Problem #2 – Casuncad, Zoe N.

In a mall parking, the parking fee costs 45 pesos for the first 2 hours. Once you
exceed, 20 pesos will be added to your payment every 30 minutes. How much will it
cost if you park for 8.5 hours?

Solution:
Let h be the hours anf f be the fee

F(h) ={₱ 45+₱ 4520(h−2)

if 0<h ≤ 2
if h>2

₱45 + 20 (8.5 - 2)
= 45 + 20 (6.5)
= 45 + 130
= ₱175
Problem #3 – Catingcoy, Husser M.
My friends and I are craving for milktea. For that, decided to pick an order through
Grab food. A single original flavored milktea costs Php120. There is an option of
having the add-ons such as the pearl which is Php20. Furthermore, a delivery charge
of Php100 should be considered. Now, we are planning to order 20 pieces of it, only
10 with additional pearls. How much will it cost us?

Solution:
Let M be the milktea

M(20)=120M+100+200
=120(20)+ 100+200
= 2400+ 100+200
= 2500+200
= 2700
Problem #4 – Datinguinoo, Marielle R.
A foreigner is having a vacation here in the Philippines. He is wondering to go to
Laguna coming here from Manila. To try something new, he wants to experience a
different mode of transportation. A proposed Philippine National Railway train
would charge Php20 for the first 5km of travel and Php 0.75 for each additional km
over the proposed fare.
a) Find the fare function f(x) where x represents the number of kilometers
travelled.
b) Find the proposed rate for a distance of 45km which is from Manila to Laguna.

Solution:
20 if 0< x ≤5
a) f(x) = {20+0.75 ( x−5 ) if x>5
Therefore, the fare function is f(x) = 20 + 0.75(x - 5)
b) f(x) = 20 + 0.75 (x-5)
f(45) = 20 + 0.75 (45-5)
= 20 + 0.75 (40)
= 20 + 30
f(x) = Php50 fare

Problem #5 – Escobido, Patrick Aaron F.

You have a summer job that pays time and half for overtime. That is, if you work
more than 40hrs per week, your hourly wage for extra hours is 1.5 times your
normal hourly wage of Php 30.00.
a) Write a piecewise function that gives your weekly pay in P in terms of the
number of hours h you work?
b) How much will you get paid if you work in 45 hours?

Solution:
30 h if 6 0< h≤ 40
a) P(h) = {1200+45 ( h−40 ) if h> 40
P(h) = 30(40) + 1.5 (30)(h-40)

b) P(45) = 1200 +45(45-40)

= 1200 + 45(5)
= 1425

Problem #6 – Florendo, Erinne Keith C.

In Barangay Payatas, Mang Larry recycles plastic products as a livelihood. The
weekly profit P (in pesos) is a function of number of kilograms (k) of recycled
plastic per week. The function approximating the profit is defined as P(k)= 8k - 600,
where 0 ≤ k ≤ 400. Estimate his profit if he recycled 300kg of plastic in a week.

Solution:
Let P be the Peso and k be the kilograms

P(k) = 8k – 600, k = 300

P(300)= 8(300) – 600
= 2400 – 600
= Php 1800

Problem #7 – Laxamana, Marnuel Julyn A.

Aguilar family has a 15,000 annual salary and in every salary it has 15% tax rate, if
the salary increases up to 25,000 the tax rate will become 25% and if it increases up
to 40,000 the tax rate will become 40%. Write a function relating the annual salary to
the tax rate.

Solution:
t(x) = tax rate
x = salary
x (.15)if x=15,000

{
t(x) = x (.25)if 15,000< x <25,000
x(.40) if 25,000< x <40,000

Problem #8 – Racelis, Francesca Marie T.

The cost of hiring a catering service to serve food for a party is 150 pesos per head
for 20 persons or less, 130 pesos per 21 to 50 persons and, 110 pesos per head for 51
to 100 persons. For 100 or more persons, the cost is at 100 per head. Represent the
total cost as a piecewise function of the number of attendees of the party.

Solution:
Let C be the catering service and h be the “per head”.

150 h ; if 0 ≤ h≤ 20
C(h) =
{
130 h ; if 21 ≤ h≤ 50
110 h ; if 51≤ h ≤ 100
100 h ; if h ≤ h ≤100
Problem #9 – Sarenas, Ryan Jeff S.
You decide to buy coffee in the store because you need to finish your work early as
possible. The white twin coffee pack costs 25 pesos per sachet. If you will buy more
than 2 sachets yet less than 7 sachets, it will cost you 20 per sachet. But if you will
choose to have more than or equal to 3 sachets but less than 10 sachet, it will cost 12
pesos per sachet. Express the price using piecewise function.

Solution:
Let C be the coffee and s be the price of the sachet.

25 s ; if S=1
C(s) =
{
20 s ; if 2<2<7
12 s ; if 3< S< 8
