Sustainable Energy

Electricity has been used around the world for many years. Electricity is used in many

forms, from our chargers, to microwaves, to lamps, etc. Most energy comes from nonrenewable

sources such as fossil fuels, natural gas and oils. In the past few decades renewable energy

alternatives have been created to supply sustainable electricity. There are many renewable

energy sources such as nuclear, hydro, wind and solar energy. Solar and wind have become the

two most popular within the United States and have been researched immensely. But within the

sustainable energy realm there are many arguments whether they are effective. With these most

common sustainable energy sources, wind and solar, it leads to the question: are wind turbines a

more productive way of producing sustainable energy as opposed to solar panels?

Solar energy is very effective for homeowners. Solar panels produce energy throughout

the day and can be installed almost anywhere, including roofs and even the ground. Consumers

with solar panels even make around 94% of all their electricity needs with solar panels. Overall

one 10th of renewable energy produced in 2019 came from solar power. (Aggarwall). This

means that it’s possible to have efficient solar power for at least 10% which we would need 90%

of other energy supply. Preferably sustainable. In a video, made by Fullychargedshow in 2017, it

focuses on a city in Dubai which runs on 100% sustainable energy. Their largest sustainable

energy producer is solar panels. The author states, “We emit on average 7 metric tons of CO2 per

person per year, here we are at approximately 3.1% metric tons of CO2 per person per year.”
Ortiz 2

(FullyChargedShow) That means the city produces around 4 metric tons of CO2 emissions less

than the average large city per year per person. The city relies on sustainable energy and has

around 3,500 habitants. The main points it was trying to get across was that it’s possible for

sustainable energy to be utilized for large scale use. The author mentioned that many other cities

can become fully sustainable if they put the effort in. Economically this type of living is more

economically cheaper and efficient. For example, it lowered costs for the residents who live

there. Because of the rise in technology any country can take steps forward to make communities

environmentally friendly and more sustainable. More communities would have to shift to solar

energy to make an impact in reducing CO2 emisiones. Solar energy is extremely sustainable for

homeowners, on a larger scale it has been demonstrated to be possible, but globally it could face

some challenges.

Wind energy works best in more rural areas. Some data reported is that overall about

one-quarter of renewable energy produced in 2019 came from wind. Also wind power is

beneficial in winter areas and produces wind power all day, where our solar panels stop

throughout the night. Although wind turbines produce larger quantities of energy, they have their

cons too. Wind turbines have blades that are sharp and can hurt animals that are able to fly (see

This political cartoon focuses on the dangers that wind turbines cause towards animals. Wind

turbines move at fast speeds which creates a higher risk for animals around them. Which is not

so helpful for the environment because of the damage it can cause animals. Then that would

defeat the purpose of helping the environment. The advantages of wind turbines are often

dismissed by solar energy institutions due to the noise they make and killing of animals. But,

looking at fossil fuels and CO2 emissions from nonrenewable sources on the other hand, they

have caused much more harm to animals than wind turbines have overall.

Another argument people share is that the noise from wind turbines are too loud, but actually the

turbines are no louder than a microwave. Wind turbines also emit less C02 in the atmosphere

compared to solar panels and they consume less energy. According to the author who fears he’d

win turbines, “one wind turbine can produce the same amount of electricity as 48,704 solar

panels.” (Redlitz) Wind turbine’s drawbacks are not as serious as they seem and cause less harm

than fossil fuels. Wind turbines are able to produce massive amounts of electricity for the homes

around them, except it would be more logical for them to be placed in rural areas since there’s

not enough room in cities.

I believe that solar panels are more effective for homeowners whereas wind turbines

work better in rural areas. Before I did my extensive research I assumed that solar panels would

be able to produce enough sustainable energy for everyone. But after doing extensive research I

found out that not only are there more sustainable energy options, but using only one source of

sustainable energy is not enough to produce the massive amount of energy that we consume. I

even found that using nuclear energy would help create sustainability around more areas around

the world. Sustainable energy should be the ultimate goal but having only solar or only wind

energy would be unrealistic.

Solar energy has been able to produce a tenth of sustainable energy and wind turbines

have been able to produce one quarter. Both have been shown to be reliable and effective.

Although many arguments have been made against wind power, data shows that it’s more safe

and benefits the economy more compared to non-renewable sources. Wind turbines produce

large quantities of energy in windy areas and solar panels are flexible when it comes to installing

them. They are also great for highly dense cities where apartments and buildings are all over and

there’s not room for wind turbines. That’s why the solution is that using wind turbines are more

beneficial in rural areas whereas solar panels are better for densely populated cities.
