Example Selecting Cases in SPSS

This document provides instructions for selecting a subset of cases from a complete SPSS dataset for analysis. The steps are: 1) Go to Data > Select Cases; 2) Check the "If condition is satisfied" box and select "If"; 3) Choose the variable of interest and type the condition, such as cases where respondents visited within the past 30 days; 4) Select Continue and OK. Selected cases will have a line through them, and the full dataset can be restored by going to Data > Select Cases and choosing Reset > OK.

Example Selecting Cases in SPSS

There are times you will need to analyze a subset of cases from your complete dataset.

1) SPSS Menu Sequence Data  Select Cases


2) Check If condition is satisfied then Select If …
3) Select the variable of interest then type in the If condition. In this example SPSS
will create a subset of cases of respondents who have visited within the past 30
days.
4) Select Continue then OK.

Once done, your data should look like this with a line through cases that have been
removed from analysis:

To return to the complete dataset you need to follow the


first step but then choose Reset followed by OK.
