Objective: In this virtual lab, you will identify the resources and process of DNA Extraction.
Introduction:
DNA
4. The Lysis solution you added to your Eppendorf tube and placed in the warm water bath contained detergent and
enzymes.
Disrupts the cell membrane and nuclear envelope, causing the cells to burst open and release their DNA
The salt causes proteins and other cellular debris to clump together
The heavy clumps of protein and cellular debris sink to the bottom while the strands of DNA stay at the top.
7. Isopropyl alcohol is used to precipitate out the DNA because it is not soluble. What does this mean?
The DNA will come out of the solution because DNA is not soluble
The DNA goes to the bottom and we can extract the remaining liquid.
10. Relate how shampoo performs the same function on your hair as it does on cell membranes in this lab.
Shampoo takes away the oil and dirt from your hair just like how it takes away the DNA from the cells.
