Lesson Summary:
In this lesson children will learn about the holiday Thanksgiving. They will read a book and from that they will
learn new vocabulary words, they will also have the chance to talk about what they like about thanksgiving.
Students will then have varies materials and be able to create a thanksgiving craft. I also plan on making a
Kahoot game.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson will be broken up into 2 days. The first day will be about 45 minutes. The second day will be about
50-70mins
Commentary: My goal for this lesson is to engage the students in a fun way, but at the same time a way they
can learn new vocabulary, and learn about technology and a new holiday. Thanksgiving is coming up and
students are already going to be excited for it. Some challenges I think will we difficult is making keeping the
kids on task, or making keeping them organized.
Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
The first 10 minutes I will explain to them What we will be doing for the day. I will start by telling them there is
a holiday on November 25th called thanksgiving. I will then giving them the opportunity to tell me what they
know about the holiday. I will tell them we are going to watch a video of a man reading a book called “today is
thanksgiving” by P.K Halliman. The video is about 11 minutes long. After the video I will write down 5
vocabulary words from the story. I will ask the class if they know any of the meanings of the 5 words. I will
then explain to them what each words mean. This ill take about 20ish minutes. At the end of the lesson I will
have them pick one vocabulary word and they will need to take it home and explain it to their families.
Day 2: Today I will start the class with a game of kahoot. The game will be over some thanksgiving vocabulary
words and pictures they students will have to guess what it is. First I will take 5 minutes and explain to my
students what cahoot is and what their game is about. I will take another 5 minutes and put them into groups.
The game will take about 15 minutes. After the game the students will get to pick through varies different
textures and materials. They will get to create their own thanksgiving craft. They can make anything they like.
Turkeys, pilgrims, ect. This should roughly take 30-55 min
Pre-Assessment:
A way I can pre- access my students is give them a quiz about thanksgiving they can take to see the things they
know. I would set up a quiz on our google classroom page. I will set up the quiz with true and false and
watching of pictures.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will score the quiz out of 10 points. Each question will be worth a point. It won’t count against them in
anyway.
Post-Assessment:
The students will have to write the vocabulary words fro the book 5 times each and summarize them.
Scoring Guidelines:
This will be worth 10 points.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: Matching games, Kahoot,
