The Pitch of A Sound and The Frequency of The Waves of The Sound

The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency of its waves, with higher frequencies producing higher pitches. The loudness of a sound relies on the amplitude of its waves, where larger amplitudes are louder. Finally, the quality or timbre of a sound is determined by the distinguishing vibrational features present, which allow sounds to be identified.

Waves II Notes

WAVES II (SOUND)

The Pitch of a Sound and the frequency of the waves of the Sound

There is direct relationship between the pitch of a sound and frequency of the waves of that
sound. Hence one can summarize that : the pitch of a sound depends on the frequency .

The Loudness of a sound and amplitude of the sounds wave

Loudness is an aural impression produce when the ear drum oscillates with large amplitude.
Loudness of a sound is how much energy is carried along with the wave motion from its source.
A smaller amplitude wave sounds quieter and a larger amplitude wave sounds louder . Hence one
can summarize that : loudness of a sound depends on the amplitude of the sounds wave.

Amplitude of wave and the Intensity of a Sound

Intensity is the rate at which a wave carries energy away from a source through a unit of area at
right angles to the direction of travel of the waveform.

The Quality or timbre( pronounced ‘Tam-ber’)

The quality of a sound /note is the distinguishing features or types of vibrations that are present
in the sound /note which makes identifiable .
