necessary for the default BrightStor ARCserve Backup database. The BrightStor ARCserve
Backup database can grow to several GB in size depending on how it’s used.
Furthermore, connect your storage devices to the machine you designate as your
BrightStor ARCserve Backup Server. The Single Server Edition supports backup to disk
and stand-alone tape drives or jukeboxes with only one tape drive.

BrightStor ARCserve Backup requires that you license your product. To obtain the Single
Server license free of charge, please visit www.fujitsu-siemens.com/ca-register and

Additional Hints
BrightStor ARCserve Backup Documentation
The ARCserve documentation can be found on the ARCserve CD in the “Doc” folder.
It is available in English, German and Italian.

Problems with the Windows Portmap Service

If BrightStor ARCserve Backup detects port 111 conflicts, indicating that it is using the
same port number for the CA Remote Procedure Call server service as a previously
installed portmapper, BrightStor ARCserve Backup will automatically switch to another
port number.
To avoid having other software affected by a similar problem, change the status of the
CA Remote Procedure Call Server service from automatic to manual. If you have installed
BrightStor ARCserve Backup in a Microsoft Cluster Services environment, change the
status of the CA Remote Procedure Call Server service from automatic to disabled. This
enables you to avoid similar port conflicts after the system has completed the boot process.
BrightStor ARCserve Backup can work with external portmappers (SFU 3.0, NobleNet
Portmapper, StorageTek LibAttach, etc.). However, BrightStor ARCserve Backup services
may try to initialize before the external portmapper during the machine boot-up
sequence. Under these circumstances, BrightStor ARCserve Backup services will fail to
initialize. To avoid this problem, perform the following steps:
1. Create the DWORD DelayedRegistration in the following:
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ComputerAssociates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup
\Base\Portmap
3. Assign a decimal value for this key, indicating the number of minutes BrightStor
ARCserve Backup services wait before initializing portmapper registration. For
example, DelayedRegistration=2 causes all BrightStor ARCserve Backup services to
start, but not register with the portmapper for two minutes after startup.

12
Instructions for Installing BrightStor ARCserve Backup on a 64-bit Version of Windows
You can install BrightStor ARCserve Backup on the following 64-bit Windows platforms:
왏 Intel® Itanium (IA-64) family
왏 x64-based systems including AMD Athlon64 and Opteron and Intel® Xeon EM64T
Due to differences between 64-bit and 32-bit Windows platforms, the following
elements of 64-bit operating systems cannot be accessed by 32-bit applications:
왏 Areas of the Windows system registry
왏 System settings files included in a System State backup
왏 Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writers
To perform backup and restore operations on 64-bit machines, the 64-bit version of the
BrightStor ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows must be installed with the server.
For further information, please check the ARCserve Administrator Guide
(chapter 1—Backup and Restore Operations on 64-Bit Windows).
