Old-timers in Iloilo City and Province are all familiar with the Dainty Restaurant. Individuals and
families that have been dining in the well-known restaurant witnessed its history from its
location in J.M. Basa Street to its present site in Iznart Street. Dainty Restaurant is reputed to be
the oldest existing restaurant in the city.
Dainty Restaurant was established in 1929 in Ledesma Street by three entrepreneurs who had
trained in Wing Kee Restaurant situated near Plaza Libertad, famous in the early 1900s for
Cantonese foods. They were Chung Sai, Kong Kee, and Tam Lee Hee, all of whom acted also as
chefs. Later, the three were joined by Ah Yeng and a certain Mr. Sia who both served the
restaurant as managers or overseers.
Dainty Restaurant initially specialized in American dishes and, by 1940, it was already a favorite
eating place. By then, it had moved to J.M. Basa Street at a site not very far from Plazoleta Gay.
The years after the war saw the growing popularity of Dainty Restaurant. It became a favorite
eating destination and watering hole of Iloilo's populace, Including prominent ones, such as Vice
President Fernando Lopez.
As it was in the past, Dainty Restaurant today is still crowded with people eager to taste its
various noodle specialties, as well as its famous siopao and pan de Leche. Of course, there are
other menus that one can order for take-out or dine-in at the restaurant itself. But the name
Dainty Restaurant has always been synonymous with pancit guisado and bihon guisado, as well
as siopao and pan de Leche. These are the ones that have made the restaurant endure the test
of time.
Products/Services
The restaurant offered Cantonese-Filipino fusion cuisine as if their specialties. Authentic Asian
dishes and delicacies were being served since the first day of their service. Later, they added
some dishes on their menu as pioneers on their restaurant, respected and willingly served,
American dishes were dramatically known all around the Philippines since WWII and that was a
remarkable thing they did. The fusion of dishes was made as they explore every palate of their
customers/guests.
Food Service was slightly changed because of time. Trends and new ways of service were
performed all around the world. The restaurant adopted the American Table Setting style for the
last decade and still doing it as their business is growing. The restaurant has an open kitchen for
the customers' shows and has trusted the food that they eat is in the right hands.
Dainty Restaurant offers online and on-call reservations all around the city. They are showcasing
the authenticity and features of the restaurant posted on social media and commercials. From
the Front doors to the fine-dining kitchen and to their open kitchen that surely, they know how
to give the satisfaction of their customers.
Marketing Challenges
As the pandemic arises, the restaurant has been in a bit of trouble because of the economic
crisis. They tend to lower their prices a bit to avoid loss of sales. Ordering online delivery like
Grab Food or Food Panda is so much helpful for them even though they already have a food
delivery service of their own.
