Assignment # 3 (Chapter 2) Due 3:00 PM of January 31, 2008

This document contains instructions for Assignment #3 of the Engineering Thermodynamics course CHE 243. It includes 4 problems involving piston-cylinder arrangements containing air, water, steam or liquid-vapor mixtures. The problems require determining states, temperatures, pressures, volumes, boundary work and spring constants. Graphs of P-V and T-V diagrams are also required. Calculations must account for phase changes and verify if pistons contact boundary stops.

Assignment # 3 (Chapter 2) Due 3:00 PM of January 31, 2008

1. A piston-cylinder arrangement (shown below) initially contains 5 kg of air at 150 kPa

and 400°C (State 1). The setup is allowed to cool to the ambient temperature of 20°C
(State 2). Remember, you have to see if in state 2 the piston is touching the stops or not?
Answer the following:
a. Is the piston resting on the stops in the final state?
What is the final pressure in the cylinder?
b. Determine the amount of the boundary work during the process?

2. Two kilograms of water are contained in a piston-cylinder (shown below) with a mass
less piston and loaded with a linear spring. Initially the spring force is zero and Patm = 100
kPa with a volume of 0.2 m3 (State 1). Heat is now added until the pressure reaches 1.2
MPa (State 2). If the piston just hits the upper stops, the volume is 0.8 m3 and T =600°C.
Remember you have to verify if the piston is touching the upper stops or not at State 2?
Answer the following:
(a) Find the final temperature,
(b) Show the P–V diagram,
(c) Find the work done during the process.
3. A piston–cylinder device initially contains steam at 300 kPa, 300°C and 0.5 m3
(State1). At this state, a linear spring (F α x) is touching the piston but exerts no force on
it. Heat is now slowly transferred to the steam, causing the pressure and the volume to
rise to 600 kPa and 0.6 m3 (State 2), respectively. Answer the following:
(a) Determine the final temperature,
(b) Determine the spring constant if the area of the piston is 0.1 m2,
(c) Determine the amount of the boundary work,
(d) Show the process on a P-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.

4. A mass of 5 kg of saturated liquid–vapor mixture of water is contained in a piston–

cylinder device at 500 kPa (State 1). Initially, 0.5 kg of the water is in the liquid phase
and the rest is in the vapor phase. Heat is now transferred to the water, and the piston,
which is resting on a set of stops, starts moving when the pressure inside reaches 800 kPa
(State 2). Heat transfer continues until the total volume increases by 10 percent (State 3).
Answer the following:

(a) Determine the initial and final temperatures,

(b) Determine the mass of liquid water when the piston first starts moving,
(c) Determine he boundary work done during this process,
(d) Show the process on P-v and T-v diagrams.
