The Effects of Engaging Romantic Relationship on Academic Performance among Senior

High Students in ASNHS

Chapter 1

1.1 Introduction

A lot of students nowadays are involved in to different kind of relationship.

Somehow students are getting careless on engaging this topic. Romantic relationship is

sharing attitudes, sharing dreams, strengths and vulnerabilities with that person. There is

also kind of mutual support between each other; the two person help each other grow.

They are willing to learn from the other person and vice versa.

During adolescence, teenagers are interested in dating because of the desire to

belong with other people who have romantic relationships. (Alma Mae J. Bernales & Fretzy

Colonia, 2011). (Myers, 2010) supported the need to belong theory by declaring that people who

find a person complimenting their needs to whom they can share their problems with, makes

those people more acknowledgeable.

Because of this need to belong theory, teenagers nowadays happen to synchronize

their time in both academic performance and romantic side. Engaging themselves in this

romantic relationship makes them feel they are special because someone is caring about them,

loving them, helping them, etc. (Fretzy Colonia & Alma Mae J. Bernales, 2011)

In the Philippines, some students involved themselves in romantic relationship in

which they tend to accept a great challenge to maintain a good academic performance. Together

with the increase of workloads which includes projects, school papers, reports and especially

exams. Therefore, being a good student gives them more responsibility and it requires a lot of

time and attention.

In addition, (Myers, 2010) said that relationships also consume much of the life of the

students. In the study of (Mehl & Pennebaker, 2003) it is proven that 28 percen of the students’

waking hours were spent just by having conversation by their romantic partners.

Furthermore, there is a research study in which it was conducted by (Campbell & Oliver,

1994) where they found benefits in having romantic relationship such as “companionship”, the

feeling of happiness, feeling loved, intimacy, self-growth and self-understanding, and more

positive self-esteem”. These benefits are found to be the reason of motivation of students in

pursuing their studies.

However, Campbell and Oliver (1994) also pointed out some negative sides in a romantic

relationship, and namely they are stress and worry about the relationship, social and non-social

sacrifices, increased dependence in the partner, fights, time and effort investment and feeling

worse about self which were said to be the reason of stress and anxiety of a student.

The Agusan del Sur National High School is having a big population of students and is

one of the schools in Caraga which is having a big number of students that engage into romantic

relationships. However, not all of them are good in academic performance. But, some of them

are highly motivated in their studies.

Consequently, a question on this study entitled “The Effects of Engaging Romantic

Relationship on Academic Performance among Senior High Students in ASNHS” whether they

can manage their time efficiently or not still remains. Moreover, determining the negative effects

of this study specifically how they affect their academic performance still remains a problem.

In order to answer these problems, this study needs to determine the effects of engaging

relationship on academic performance among senior high students in Agusan Sur National High

School. Lastly, this study points to determine if there is a relationship between the time

management of a student, their levels of motivation and academic performance of the senior high

students in ASNHS.
