This document contains a 4 question exam on human factors engineering. The first question contains 15 true/false statements about topics in human factors like ergonomics, visual perception, and auditory alarms. The second question involves calculating percentiles and accommodation widths for hip breadth measurements. The third question asks students to estimate compression forces on the L5/S1 disc from a lifting task. The fourth question provides data from a step test to calculate VO2max, classify exertion level, and determine an appropriate work-rest schedule.

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department

Course: IE 464 (Human Factors Engineering) Medterm exam.

Semester: Fall 2016 Date: 25 / 9 /2016
Instructor: Ahmad Altaboli Time allowed: 1.5 hours

Student name:_____________________________________________ Student no:__________________

1- Show whether each of the following statements is true or false. (15*2=30 points)

T F 1. The goal of human factors may be defined as making the human interaction with systems
one that increases productivity, safety and user satisfaction.

T F 2. The broad categories of Ergonomics include: task and equipment, environment, and
selection and training.

T F 3. When a person sits with a slumped posture, the lumbar kyphosis changes into a lordosis;
increasing the pressure on the discs and causing low-back pain.

T F 4. Administrative and engineering methods can be used to prevent CTDs.

T F 5. Local muscle fatigue is often observed in physical work requiring static muscle
contractions, due to the reduction of blood flow to the local muscle and the rapid
accumulation of waste products.
T F 6. NlOSH recommends that energy cost of physical work should not exceed 40%-50% of
workers’ VO2max.
T F 7. Cone cells are sensitive to all wavelengths while rod cells are insensitive to long
wavelengths.
T F 8. Illuminating objects in red light in a dark environment will strongly affect the rod cells’
dark adaptation.

T F 9. For reading print, white text on black background offers higher contrast sensitivity than
black text on white background.
T F 10. Relative size, and light and shading are examples of top-down pictorial cues we use to
judge depth and distance for far objects.
T F 11. The temporary threshold shift (TTS) is large immediately after the noise is terminated but
declines over the following minutes as hearing is "recovered”.
T F 12. Voice communications is far more effective in a face-to-face mode than it is when the
listener cannot see the speaker, because redundancy of top-down processing is employed.
T F 13. We may reduce noise in the workplace by focusing on the source, the path or
environment, or the listener.
T F 14. Auditory alarms induce a less level of compliance than do visual alarms; one reason is
that it is much more difficult to “close our ears" than it is to close our eyes.
T F 15. One criterion for designing an auditory alarm is that it should not disrupt the perceptual
understanding of other signals or any background speech communications that may be
essential to deal with the alarm.

2- A population has a mean hip breadth sitting of 40 cm with a standard deviation of 3.5 cm.

a. Calculate the following:

i. The 5th percentile of the population.
ii. The 95th percentile of the population.

b. Calculate the width of a seat to fit 90% of the population. Show each of the following in your answer:
 Type of accommodation (reach or clearance situation).
 The percentile value.
 Clothing allowances.
(10+15= 25 points)

3- Using the single-segment planar static biomechanical models estimate the compression force on the
L5/S1disc for the following lifting task. Use the default values given in the textbook to estimate any
other measurements you may need to finish the estimation. Is it safe to perform this task? Why?

Measurement Value

Individual’s body weight (kg) 60

Weight of the load (kg) 3

The horizontal distance from the load to the L5/S1 disc (cm) 35
The horizontal distance from the center of mass of the torso to the
25
L5/S1 disc (cm)

(20 points)

4- Information of a step-test is given in the table.

Measurement Value

Gender female

Individual’s weight in Kg 55

Individual’s age in years 21

Step height (cm) 25

Average frequency of stepping (steps/min) during steady state 20

Individual's average heart rate (bmp) during steady state 115

a. Estimate VO2max.
b. How would you classify the level of physical effort required by this test?
c. Should this individual perform a work with similar level of physical effort for 8 hours without
rest? If not, determine the required work-rest schedule.
(15+5+10= 30 points)

End of Questions … Good Luck!
