Session 12 Moving Fixture and Stock Models On A Machine: 1. Open A New Project File

The document describes how to create a stock model using a sweep profile and position it and fixture models in VERICUT. It involves: 1) Creating a sweep stock model with a specified profile and thickness. 2) Positioning the stock model against a fixture block model using mate and align constraints. 3) Adding a second fixture block to represent the movable vise jaws to hold the stock model.

Session 12

Moving Fixture and Stock Models on a Machine

In this session we will learn how to create an extruded shape stock model and use the
positioning tools in VERICUT to locate the stock and the fixture models on the machine.

1. Open a new project file

• Launch VERICUT
• File > New Project > Inch
• Set your Working Directory by clicking on the toolbar icon
• Display the Project Tree by clicking on the toolbar icon
• In the Project Tree, right mouse click on Setup 1 and select Expand All
Children from the pop-up menu

2. Adding fixture
• In the Project Tree, double-click on Fixture and choose Model Tab
• In the Modeling panel choose Type = Block
• Length (X) = 4
• Width (Y) = 1
• Height (Z) = 1
• Add
• Right click in the Workpiece View, and Select Fit

3. Adding Stock by Creating a Sweep Model
A sweep model or extruded model is used to represent the stock

• In the Project Tree, click on Stock

• In the Modeling panel’s Model tab choose Type = Model File
• Sketcher…
• In the Profile Type window choose Sweep > OK

VERICUT V6 Session 12 2
Create the following sweep model using the profile described below. The model needs to
have a Z thickness of 3.375in.
• Stretch the window so all the columns are visible and make sure the Grid Size is
0.125

• Add (creates a point X0, Y0)

• with the cursor on the grid, pick the point X0, Y1 (the values on the axis will
indicate your cursor position as you move on the grid)

VERICUT V6 Session 12 3
• pick the point X0.125, Y1
• pick the point X0.125, Y1.25

• Pick the point X2, Y1.25

Pan the view as needed (must be selected again to return to the pick mode cursor )

• Pick the point X2, Y-1.25

• Pick the point X0.125, Y-1.25
• Pick the point X0.125, Y-1
• Pick the point X0, Y-1
• Pick the point X0, Y0

VERICUT V6 Session 12 4
• The sweep model thickness is: Zmax 3.375in
• File > Save As > profile_stock.swp > Save
• File > Close
• In the modeling window select Model File > Browse
• Select profile_stock.swp > Add
• In the Workpiece View window right mouse click and select Fit

VERICUT V6 Session 12 5
4. Position the Sweep Model
To Position the Stock Model onto the fixture we use the Assemble Tab within the
Position Tab
• In the Position tab select the Assemble tab
With the 3 constraints we will locate the stock model in contact with the fixture block

First Constraint
• Constraint Type = Mate
• Pick the arrow next to Constraint type

We will mate the stock step with the surface of the fixture block
• Move the cursor on the step face, when the vector is aligned correctly, left-mouse
pick

VERICUT V6 Session 12 6
• Move the cursor on the top of the fixture block, pick the face

The stock is moved so the 2 selected faces are in the same plane but in opposing
directions (the view was rotated for clarity)

VERICUT V6 Session 12 7
Second Constraint
• Constraint Type = Mate
• Pick the arrow next to the second Constraint type
• Pick the faces on the stock and fixture as shown below
Tip: Rotate the View to pick the fixture face

Moved stock

VERICUT V6 Session 12 8
Third Constraint
• Constraint Type = Align
• Pick the arrow next to the third Constraint type
• Pick the faces on the stock and fixture as shown below

Moved Stock

5. Add second Fixture Vise

To finish the Stock / Fixture assembly the movable part of the jaws needs to be added
to hold the stock model

VERICUT V6 Session 12 9
• In the Project Tree, click on Fixture again
• In the Modeling panel’s Model tab
• Add (a second identical block was added to the fixture component in the project
tree)

• In the Modeling panel’s Position tab

• Translate tab
• Pick in the From field, pick the top left corner of the fixture block

VERICUT V6 Session 12 10
• Pick in the To field, pick the corner of the stock step,

Move fixture block

• Press OK in the Modeling window
