Welcome to the Earth Science for Grade 11 Self-Instructional Module (SIM) on

Earth Systems.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

What I Need to Know

Hello! Are you familiar with Mobile Legends? If so, how do you attack
your opponents as a team? Do you follow a certain system? How about working
as a part- timer during this season of pandemic? How do you observe the way
your company handles its workforce? Just like how you play a game or work in
a particular place, our beloved home planet also follows a system. In this
module, you will be familiar with the Earth Systems and how they are related
to each other.

What is a system? What does it do to our planet? Let us find out in the
next lesson.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

● explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across whose
boundaries matter and energy flow (S11/12ES-Ib-4)

Specifically, you are to:

1. identify the Earth’s subsystems;

2. describe the four subsystems of Earth.

What I Know

Are you excited to learn about this topic? Let’s try to take a look at the
things you already know.

Instruction: Read and understand the questions carefully.

True or False. Determine whether the statement is true or false. Write true if it
is correct and false if it is not. Write your answer on the space provided before
the number.

Lesson

2 Earth’s Subsystems

Let’s get started…

Earth receives energy from the sun and returns some of this energy to
space. Our planet has such kind of system . Earth has four (4) major subsystems
that we will discuss in the next lessons.

What’s In

Before we proceed…

Let us be reminded of our last topic. In the previous lesson, you were
able to recognize Earth's unique properties, which enables it to support life.

7
You have learned that our planet is indeed one of a kind. Do you still remember
its unique features? What are those?
At this point, we will have another insight about this amazing planet
where we live in. We will investigate the type of system that it follows.

Trivia Time!
In the 1970s, the Gaia Hypothesis was jointly developed
by James Lovelock, an English scientist/naturalist, and Lynn
Margulis, an American microbiologist. This hypothesis states
that the biosphere is a self-regulating system capable of
controlling its physical and chemical environment.

What’s New

Let us continue the fun in learning!

Activity 1: What’s the “Puzz” Word?

Objective:
In this activity, you will identify the different processes related to the
earth’s subsystems.

8
Procedure:
1. Observe the picture shown below. Unscramble the letters to form a word
related to the picture.
2. Answer the given questions.

1. CNODENASTINO = ______________________
2. RPECPIITANTOI = ______________________
3. VAPEORAOTIN = ______________________
4. TANRSPIRAIONT = ______________________
5. NINFTRATIONIL = ______________________
6. TAERW CCLEY = ______________________

Answer the following questions:

1. What words have you come up with?

2. What are the different processes involved in the picture? What do you
mean by these processes?

9
3. Describe the picture. Which Earth subsystem is highly involved in the
picture?

What is It

How was the activity? I hope you enjoyed it!

This time, let me introduce the four subsystems of earth. Kindly read it
with comprehension.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is made up of thin gaseous layers that cover the

lithosphere. There are five layers of the atmosphere: troposphere,
stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. In the present,
it is composed of 78% nitrogen (N), 21% oxygen (O2), 0.9% argon (Ar), 0.03%
carbon (C), and trace amounts of other gases. The atmosphere insulates the
temperature inside the planet and blocks the ultraviolet radiation from the
sun. There is also a constant exchange of heat and moisture between the
atmosphere and the hydrosphere through the hydrologic cycle/water
cycle.

Lithosphere
Biosphere

The lithosphere,

also known as forms on Earth. includes

while oxygen is released as a byproduct. The biosphere is very important in
the carbon cycle because of the presence of CO2 in it.

Hydrosphere

About 70% of the Earth is covered with liquid water (hydrosphere), and
much of it is in the form of ocean water, which is salt water. Only 3% of
Earth's water is fresh: two-thirds are in the form of ice, and the remaining
one-third is present in streams, lakes, and groundwater.

The figure below shows the relationship of each Earth subsystem to one
another.

Plants use carbon dioxide which

is the main climate-altering gas.

This is it! Now that you have learned about the Earth’s subsystems,
let’s move on to our next activity.

What’s More

Let’s bring out the artist in you!

Activity 2: Draw It All Out!

Objective:
In this activity, you will illustrate the interaction of the Earth’s
Subsystems in your area.

Materials Needed:
Module, Art material like crayons (anything available)

12
Procedure:
1. Roam around your place and look for a spot wherein you can see
the interaction of different Earth’s subsystems.
2. Draw it using your available art materials.
3. Check the rubrics for your guidance.
4. Answer the guide questions.
