History of Math Syllabus

This 3 credit, weekly course covers the history of mathematics from early number systems through modern times. Over four quarters, students will learn about the development of mathematics in ancient civilizations like Egypt and Greece. They will study major Greek mathematicians like Euclid and their contributions to geometry, logic and proof. Later, figures from the Alexandrian school and Diophantus' work in algebra will be examined. Finally, the mechanical philosophies of Descartes and Newton and the emergence of probability and statistics with Pascal, Bernoulli and Laplace will be discussed. The goal is for students to understand the historical progression of mathematical concepts and their applications.

CO1 Determine the history of Number systems, arithmetic, and geometry; nature of problems
considered and methods developed; major achievements; recovery and influence of the
tradition in Egypt and Greek.

CO2 Differentiate the distinct character of Greek mathematics (geometry, logic, proof,
axiomatic structure) and the importance of the developments during classical period.

CO3 Demonstrate their knowledge of basic historical facts; they will understand the
development of mathematics and mathematical thought.

CO4 Identify the different mathematicians and their contribution in the field of mathematics.
