Computer Fundamentals

Tutorials Point (India) Ltd. Is a YouTube Channel, with more than 1.82 million
subscribers. Their channel is anchored by the idea that, “there exists a class of readers who
respond better to online content and prefer to learn new skills at their own pace from the
comforts of their drawing rooms”. The lecturer for this topic was Ms. Shweta. On the video,
she gave the overview and basic knowledge about computers. She mentioned the work-flow,
basic parts, and the model of how the computer performs its action based on the user's
command. According to her, there are two processes of how data is being applied and analyzed
by the computer. Data is technically the input of your computer. Computers have 5 major
characteristics. These are Speed, Accuracy, Reliability, Versatility, and Storage Capacity. Each
performs independently, yet all of them are interconnected. These characteristics are what
make the computer the best and efficient. Computers can have benefits and also downsides.
Advantages such as computers do not get tired and help humans become more intelligent by
providing resources. In contrast, the disadvantages are it has no brain, it needs electricity, and it
won’t work without the basic knowledge of the user about how to utilize it. Next up, Booting.
Booting is not merely the switching on of the computer; it is a process where it loads the
operating system into the computer’s main memory, and it also prepares all the applications in
the state of readiness. Booting can be classified into two types; cold and warm booting. Cold
booting is when you switch on your computer then it loads the operating system to the main
memory. Warm booting is typically when the computer was already running but you just need
to restart it or rebooted maybe because you installed new programs or applications. Previously,
computers were classified based on their processor, but since in the modern days, all computer
uses microprocessors, computers are now classified based on sizes. Computers now can be
desktop, laptop, tablet, server, mainframe, and supercomputer. Each has its unique features
different from one another but can perform effectively. Moving on to computer Services. The
server provides specific services to the system connected to it and can execute multiple
requests simultaneously. There is a lot of servers such as File storage server, game server,
database, server, mail server, printer, and many more. However, the mainframe is a type of
server which is more applicable and widely used in big businesses and real-life application
such as banks, hospitals, and establishments that contains private data and information. Hence,
a computer is not an ordinary device, but a tool and a key for a convenient life.

The computer is the greatest achievement in the history of humanity. Computers made our
lives into something no one can ever think of in ancient times. All those people behind the
development of computers deserve recognition. Computers have changed our lives and will
continue to change our lives through time. Indeed that computers are what made humans
survive for a long after all these adversaries, challenges, and catastrophic events that we
encountered. Each experience made people find ways to prevent and mitigate these
circumstances by creating simulations using computers. Computers can compute possibilities
given any amount of data as long as it can fit its storage capacity. One thing that bothers me
right now is that will be there a computer who can think of its own? A computer that can repair
itself and generates knowledge without the presence of human inputting the data. A computer
that can create, modify, and produce algorithms on its own. A computer that can think as
humans do. I believe there are already great numbers of accomplishment and success in this
field. We are almost there and it scares me. It gives me uneasiness of tomorrow, someone out
there might creating something like that and will create a war and end humanity.

Computer engineers play a major rule in the progression of our lives. They contributed to
almost every aspect of our lives; Health, Education, Security name them all. Every digital
technology you used in these times is the computer engineer’s forte. As a computer engineer,
the videos gave me an overview and the fundamentals of the computer. It is simple yet packed
with information just enough to grasp the idea of a computer. It’s a great start to level off,
discover, and to prepare myself by having an initial approach to the world of technology;
where Computer Engineer takes the lead towards Excellency.
