Design Steps For Continuous Beams

This document provides guidelines for designing continuous concrete beams. It includes: 1. Calculating the effective depth required to satisfy deflection criteria. 2. Determining the overall beam depth and effective depth provided. 3. Calculating factored loads. 4. Analyzing for shear and moment using load coefficients from design codes. 5. Designing flexural reinforcement for positive and negative moments. 6. Checking shear strength and designing shear reinforcement if needed. 7. Design of continuous beams

1. Basic data
No. of spans, Width of bearing (support), effective span, fck, fy,
cover, superimposed DL, superimposed LL, width of beam (b),
Depth of web (Dw) , Thickness of slab (flange depth, Df)
b
Df

Dw

2. Effective and overall depth of the beam

𝐿
basic = 26*M.F (for continuous beams, pg-37, IS 456-2000)
𝑑

Assume pt = 0.7%

Therefore, M.F = 1.1 (from graph given on pg-38 of IS 456-

2000)

Eff. Depth required to satisfy the deflection criteria,

𝑳
dreq =
𝟐𝟔∗𝑴.𝑭

Overall depth, D = Df + Dw

Effective depth provided, dprov = D – cover – φ/2 > drequired

3. Factored loads
Self wt. of beam = b*D*unit wt. of concrete
Total factored DL = 1.5 * (superimposed DL + Self wt.)

Total factored LL = 1.5* superimposed LL

4. Analysis for shear and moment by coefficients

Span moments and support moments
Moment due to DL = Coeff. * Total factored DL * Leff2

Moment due to LL = Coeff. * Total factored LL * Leff2

Total Moment (in KNm) = MDL + MLL

Shear
Shear due to DL = Coeff. * Total factored DL * Leff

Shear due to LL = Coeff. * Total factored LL * Leff

Total Shear (in KN) = S.FDL + S.FLL

Coefficients from table 12 and 13 of IS 456-2000

5. Design for flexure
Postive R/F
Area of steel required,
𝑀𝑢
𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑞 =
𝐷
0.87 ∗ 𝑓𝑦 ∗ (𝐷 − 𝑓 )
2

Assume dia. of bars,

calculate numbers of bars required (N)

𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑞
N= 𝜋
∗𝜑2
4

𝜋
Astprovided = N * ∗ 𝜑2
4

Negative R/F at supports

𝑓𝑐𝑘 4.6 ∗ 𝑀𝑢
𝑝𝑡 = 50 ∗ ∗ {1 − √1 − }
𝑓𝑦 𝑓𝑐𝑘 ∗ 𝑏 ∗ 𝑑2
𝑝𝑡∗𝑏∗𝑑
Ast,required = 100
Assume dia. of bars (φ),
calculate numbers of bars required (N)

𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑞
N= 𝜋
∗𝜑2
4

𝜋
Astprovided = N * ∗ 𝜑2
4

6. Design of shear R/F

√1+5𝛽−1 0.8∗𝑓𝑐𝑘
• τc = 0.85 * √(0.87 ∗ 𝑓𝑐𝑘) * where 𝛽 =
6∗𝛽 6.89∗𝑝𝑡

𝑉𝑢
• τv = where Vu = Max SF
𝑏∗𝑑

• if τv < τc , therefore OK but provide minimum shear

reinforcement.

• If τv > τc , design for shear is necessary

• Assume dia. Stirrups and calculate spacing as follows:

0.87∗𝑓𝑦∗𝐴𝑠𝑣
Sv =
𝑏(τv − τc)

The provided spacing should not exceed :

i. 0.75d
ii. 300mm
0.87∗𝑓𝑦∗𝐴𝑠𝑣
iii. (Spacing for min. shear R/F)
0.4∗𝑏
