Answer any FOUR Questions. Time allowed: 3 hours
All questions carry equal marks
This examination paper consists of 5 pages.
QUESTION 1
(a) A short column is made up of two steel pipes, one on top of the other as shown in Figure 1. If
the allowable stress in compression is 100MN/m2,
(i) What is the allowable axial load P1 if the axial load P2 = 200kN;
(ii) What is the allowable load P1 if the load P2 = 80kN? Neglect the weight of the pipes.
(b) Rework the problem in Part (a), assuming that the direction of the force P1 is reversed, i.e., P1
becomes a tensile force. Assume that the allowable tensile stress is also 100MN/m2.

QUESTION 2
Two wires are connected to a rigid bar as shown in Figure 2, and a mass of 900 kg is applied. The
cross-sectional area of the left wire is 60 (mm)2, and its E is 200 000 MN/m2; the corresponding
quantity for the right wire is 120(mm)2 , and E = 70 000MN/m2 . Calculate the vertical displacement
of the weight.
Displacements of Individual wires: [20 Marks]
Displacement of the weight: [5 Marks]

QUESTION 3
(a) A hollow shaft is of 100mm outside diameter and 80mm inside diameter. If the allowable
shearing stress is 55 MPa, what torque can it transmit? What is the stress on the inner surface
of the shaft when the allowable torque is applied?
(b) For the cross-sectional area with the dimensions shown in Figure 3, determine its moment of
inertia with respect to the horizontal neutral axis.

QUESTION 4
A wooden I-beam is made with a narrow lower flange because of space limitation, as shown in Figure
4. The lower flange is fastened to the web with nails spaced longitudinally 40 mm apart, while the
vertical boards in the lower flange are glued in place. Determine the stress in the glued joints and the
force carried by each nail in the nailed joint if the beam is subjected to a vertical shear of 25kN. The
moment of inertial for the whole section around the neutral axis is 1030 x 106 mm4.
Stress in glued joints: [13 Marks]
Force in the nail: [12 Marks]

QUESTION 5
The state of stress in a loaded continuum is as follows:
x 30 MN / m 2 , y 40 MN / m 2 , and xy 30 MN / m 2
Show the data on an infinitesimal element. Then, using Mohr’s circle construction and trigonometry:
(a) Find the principal stresses and show their sense on a properly oriented element; and
(b) Find the maximum (principal) shearing stresses with the associated normal stresses and show the
results on a properly oriented element.
Display of stresses: [5 Marks]
Part (a) & Part (b): [10 Marks each]

QUESTION 6
The cross-section of a compression member for a small bridge is made as shown in Figure 5. The top
cover plate is 12mm by 450 mm and the two C310 x 30.8 channels are placed 250mm from back to
back. If this member is 6m long, what is its slenderness ratio? Check L/r in two directions.
Properties of a C310 x 30.8 are:
Area = 3929 (mm)2, Ixx = 53.7 x 106 (mm)4, Iyy = 1.61 x 106(mm)4 .
