Man-machine communication

3.1 General
This document contains the information on man-machine communication required for the
UNITROL 5000 excitation system. Please read this manual carefully before starting work
on the system.
The man-machine communication tools deals with the following operations
• Display of signals and operating values.
• Display and adjustment of parameters.
• Changing of software-applications.
The changing of applications requires very thorough knowledge of the system and may only
be carried out by trained personnel.

3.1.1 Tools for man-machine communication

The following instruments can be used for man-machine communication:

• ARC NET Control Panel AFC 094 AE (LCP)

Optionally, the ARC NET control panel (LCP) is used

to operate the UNITROL 5000 system from local. It
also allows displaying important process signals. It is
configurable and is connected with the system via the
ARC NET.
A detailed description of the local control panel can
be found in section 7 “Operation and Control”.

• Service Panel UNS0874 (SPA)

The service panel is always included in the delivery and is

used for communication of the UNITROL5000 system. The
panel is used to display signals and to change parameters as
well as to show the fault logger A detailed description is con-
tained in section 3.2, Service Panel UNS 0874.

• Commissioning and Maintenance Tool (CMT)

Document number Lang. Rev. ind. Sheet

ABB Schweiz AG 3BHS114940 E80 en 3-3

Alternatively, the Commissioning and Maintenance Tool is
CMT a convenient software tool which can be installed on a
personal computer. CMT is used for commissioning and
maintenance work. It communicates with the UNITROL
5000 system and allows to display and record signals as
well as to change parameters. Download of particular
software applications is an additional feature of the tool.

A detailed description is contained in section 3.3, Commissioning and Maintenance Tool.

3.2 Service Panel UNS 0874

3.2.1 Introduction
This document describes the handling of the UNS 0874 service panel and its use in
connection with the UNITROL 5000 excitation system for local control and for setting
parameter values.

3.2.1.1 Use of the service panel

The service panel is a very versatile device and, in addition to providing simple local control
functions, also allows all forms of intervention in the excitation system which are required in
order to carry out complete commissioning.

Note Serious interference with the operating behaviour of the voltage

regulator, limiters, protection and controls is possible.

All alterations to the system are made by means of so-called parameter settings and are
described in section 4, “Settings“.

Note This work may only be carried out by trained commissioning

and maintenance personnel.

Document number Lang. Rev. ind. Sheet

ABB Schweiz AG 3BHS114940 E80 en 3-5

Excepted from this are setpoint alterations in locally controlled operation.

Note If, through operating error, the operating mode "Parameter

Setting" is accidentally activated, the following advice should be
followed:

[. . . .] As soon as a value in square brackets appears, the "Parameter Setting"

mode has been activated and any pressing of the arrow keys will alter the
parameter value.

Do not press the ENTER key after an operating error. This activates
alterations.

In order to cancel an alteration and quit "Parameter Setting" mode, press the
ACT key.

3.2.1.2 Intended readership

This document explains the use of the service panel in connection with the local control of
the excitation system, as well as maintenance and commissioning work. It is not an
operating manual or maintenance manual for the excitation system. For details, please refer
to sections 7 and 8. Before carrying out any work on the excitation system, the relevant
manuals should be consulted; in particular, the safety regulations in the User Manual (for the
excitation system) or maintenance manual and troubleshooting instructions must be followed.
Operating personnel
The User Manual (section 7) contains all the functions required for the local control of the
excitation system, such as actual value display, fault display and fault resetting. It is
essential that the operating personnel familiarise themselves with the contents of this section.
Commissioning and maintenance personnel
For this group of persons in particular, this description is intended to serve as a reference
work. Individual adjustments can be carried out on the basis of this manual. For more
complex interventions, up to commissioning of a system, we recommend attendance at our
UNITROL courses. The procedure and the steps necessary for maintenance and fault-
rectification work are described in section 8 "Maintenance and fault-rectification“.

3.2.3 User manual
In the following, the use of the control panel is described step by step, explaining the
necessary key commands and the resulting displays on the panel.

3.2.3.1 Local control of the excitation system

By pressing the LOC/REM key, the excitation can be controlled locally, i.e. at the excitation
cabinet, using the service panel. As a rule, the same functions are available as in the control
room.

Note Only the control procedure using the panel is described in

the following. Other means of controlling the excitation
locally are described in section 7. Also, the safety
precautions described in section 7 are to be followed for
local control.

Field breaker and excitation control

The four commands EXCITATION ON / OFF and FIELD BREAKER ON / OFF are directly
assigned to four keys. After switching to local control, these commands are enabled in all the
panel‘s operating modes and are executed immediately the keys are pressed. This does not
apply in the case of blocking functions in the control system which, for example, prevent the
excitation being switched off when the machine is connected to the network.

upload device are copied into the service panel.
UPLOADING can be carried out while the machine is
running.

Between DOWNLOADING and UPLOADING, the service panel can be unplugged from the
serial cable and carried to another system. The saving of the parameter set is also
guaranteed if the supply voltage is interrupted.
After UPLOADING, the parameters are stored in the volatile memory (RAM) of the target
system, i.e. the connected UNITROL device, and are effective until the next time the supply
voltage is switched off. In order to save the values permanently, they must be copied into the
non-volatile (FPROM) memory. The so-called PARAM. SAVE is used for this purpose.

3.2.4 Programming application function blocks
The software functions of the UNITROL 5000 system are programmed using so-called
standard programs (SP). These standard programs are permanently programmed and their
functions cannot be changed.
In addition to these standard programs, additional function blocks such as adders,
integrators etc. from a function block library (parameter and signal group 26 to 34) are
available for application-specific functions. If these function blocks are included in a task list,
they are available for connection with other function blocks or standard programs.

Fig. 3-5 Inclusion of function blocks in the task lists

Basically, 3 task lists are available. It is recommended that, whenever possible, task 2 or 3
be used for additional application-specific programs in order to avoid placing an
unnecessary load on the processor. The number of function blocks is limited as follows:
Task no. Interval Max. number
Task1 5ms 25
Task2 20ms 100
Task3 200ms 250

Document number Lang. Rev. ind. Sheet

The function blocks available in the function block library have permanently assigned inputs
and outputs, as the following example shows:

If the function block is included in a task list , these inputs can be connected using the PAR
key. This can be represented graphically as shown in the following example.

Fig. 3-7 Connection of the inputs

For example, the application function block is connected with the standard program (SP-41,
AVR_INPUT) in this way. For this purpose, the parameter 6910 is assigned the value 12742.
Once the function blocks have been included in a task list and connected together to form a
function, the function blocks still have to be activated. This is done using the parameter
2504. This must be set to 1. This is done in turn using the PAR function (see preceding
section).
How one includes function blocks in a task list and how the inputs of the function blocks are
connected is explained in the following:

3.2.4.5 Activation of the application function blocks
Once the function blocks have been included in a task list and connected together to form a
functioning program, the function blocks still have to be activated.
This is done using the parameter 2504. In order to activate the incorporated function blocks,
this parameter must be set to 1. Only now will the program run and can it be tested.
After a successful test, the parameters must once again be saved as described in the
preceding section so that the change is stored in the non-volatile memory (FPROM) on the
controller board.

Note If the parameter set is loaded from the panel into the
controller board, parameter 2504 is set to 0 for safety
reasons and must be reset to 1 by hand.

3.3.3 Installation of the software

3.3.3.1 Configuration under MS Windows 3.x

• Create a subdirectory on your hard disk, e.g. DDCTOOL for the CMT tool.
• Copy the contents of the enclosed CMT tool diskette into this directory.
• Deactivate screen saver and power-saving functions.
• Ensure that the laptop is supplied with AC power supply (not battery cell operation).

Check the DOS-file “Config.sys“

The installed drivers for the PCMCIA connection differ depending on the PC model.
Extract from a Config.sys file:
REM Star PCCard (PCMCIA) driver:
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWIZ\SSCIRUS2.EXE
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWIZ\CS.EXE/POLL:1
DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWIZ\CSALLOC.EXE
REM DEVICEHIGH = C:\CARDWIZ\CARDID.EXE
REM End PC Card (PCMCIA)

The initialisation should be deactivated by the insertion of "REM", as shown in the above
example (cardid.exe).
However, the initialisation file has a different name depending on the PC model.

3.3.7.6 Searching for a parameter
Parameters and signals are divided into different groups. Parameters and signals in a
particular group belong to the same part of a function of the control program. The maximum
number of parameters or signals in a group is 99.
Group numbers:
1...49 for parameters
51...99 for groups with programmable input signals (Offset = 50)
101...149 for groups with signals (Offset = 100)
The last 2 digits form the element number and the preceding digits form the group number.
Example:
101 Parameter group 1, element 01.
10103 Signal group 101 refers to parameter group 1, element 03.

5308 Programmable input signal of group 53 refers to

parameter group 1, element 08.
1404 Parameter group 14, element 04.
11408 Signal group 114 refers to parameter group 14, element 08.
The parameters are divided into logical groups. To find a parameter, the "Group selection"
window can be called up with the "Group Sel" button.

3.3.7.7 Downloading parameters
If a parameter file (e.g. parsig.qop) already exists, then this can be downloaded into the
UNITROL's control board using the menu option "ParSig – Download".

Fig. 3-19 Downloading parameters into UNITROL

Note After downloading, the file is only stored in the RAM of the
UNITROL 5000. If the power supply is interrupted, the
data are lost. In order to prevent this, the data must be
loaded into the flash memory of the UNITROL 5000. This
is done by setting the parameter "Backupstoremode" to
"Save paramset 1".

3.3.7.8 Comparing parameters

The parameter and signal list, which has been loaded into the CMT can be compared with
another file.
The list is compared with the selected stored file using the menu option "ParSig – Compare

3.3.11 DrvFuncs menu
The software functions of the UNITROL 5000 system are programmed using so-called
standard programs (SP). These standard programs are permanently programmed and their
functions cannot be changed.
In addition to these standard programs, additional function blocks such as adders,
integrators etc. from a function block library (parameter and signal group 26 to 34) are
available for application-specific functions. If these function blocks are included in a task list,
they are available for connection with other function blocks or standard programs.

The function blocks available in the function block library have permanently assigned inputs
and outputs, as the following example shows:

Once the function blocks have been included in a task list and connected together to form a
function, the function blocks still have to be activated. This is done using the parameter
2504. This must be set to "1". This is done in turn using the PAR function (see preceding
section).
How one includes function blocks in a task list and how the inputs of the function blocks are
connected is explained in the following:
The application can be altered or added to using the CMT tool. Function blocks contained in
the library can be inserted, deleted or changed.
