BS 1-C

1. Summarize the two major aspects of process management.

The two major aspects of process management are Managing processes to meet demand and
Dealing with process variability.
Managing processes to meet demand focuses on the management of methods and procedures to
produce a product in order to satisfy the needs and wants of the customers.
On the other hand, the Dealing with process variability, underscores the decision making of the
organizations with the process of producing their desired products. Therefore, it is one of the biggest
challenges in managing operations wherein it increases the complexity of operations management
decisions in many ways like they have to consider different variation factors before they arrive at a
certain product.

2. Briefly describe the historical evolution of operations management.

The historical evolution of operations management was through the Industrial Revolution and
Scientific Management.
The Industrial Revolution demonstrates simplicity on the production and operations before. It is
when goods were produced at a small simple area with the use of simple tools by limited people; that it
was common for one person to work from the beginning and end of the process.
The Scientific Management era brought Fredrick Taylor’s, the father of Scientific Management
methods to light and great improvement for factories. He studied work methods broadly in order to
identify the best method in maximizing outputs. He underlines the fact that the management should
spearhead from the planning of mass production, division of labour and incentives up to the
achievement of goals. Other pioneers also contributed to this movement: how principle of motion is
helpful in a simple task; idea that worker motivation is critical to improve productivity; and how
organizational structure promotes efficiency of work.

3. Describe the operations function and the nature of the operations manager’s job.

Operations function, from its root word, ‘operates’ which simply answers the question “how is it
done?” Therefore, operations function refers to all of the activities directly related on how goods and
services are produced for the customers’ satisfaction. It includes many interrelated activities, such as
forecasting, capacity planning, scheduling, managing inventories, assuring quality, motivating
employees, deciding where to locate facilities, and more.
Operations managers’ job is a very expansive work which requires diverse skill sets due to the fact
that they are the primary responsible persons for the spearheading of the activities and processes of the
overall production of goods and services. Their primary function is to guide the system through decision
making. They do not just supervise employees but also analyse and improve organizational processes for
the quality of their products and services offered, for the productivity and efficiency of their employees
that could affect the overall performance of the business. They also identify, address, and communicate
problems or opportunities with the other area of the business organization.
