Introduction & Philosophical Statement

Welcome to my classroom management portfolio! My classroom

management portfolio is a plan of what I envision my future classroom to look

like. This portfolio targets the 1st grade level. I am planning as if I will be a self-

contained teacher so this portfolio ranges in different subject areas like reading,

math, science, and social studies. This portfolio contains my philosophical

statement, my plan for the first day(s) of school, my classroom environment,

classroom procedures, classroom engagement, discipline system, and student

motivation. This portfolio will be something that I can look back on when I have

a classroom of my own. It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to

be a teacher and I am most excited to plan out what I want my classroom to

look like and how I want to manage my future classroom.

I believe that all children must have a stimulating educational

environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and

socially. It is my desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can

meet their full potential. I believe that a classroom should be a safe and caring

community. I will provide a safe and engaging learning environment where

students can feel free to share their ideas. I will build good relationships with my

students based on mutual respect and trust.

Parent Letter

Dear Families,

Welcome back! I cannot wait to begin this school year and get to know my
sweet students! I hope that you all have had an eventful summer, and that you
and your child are ready for a great year at (insert school name here).

My name is Jasmine Diaz, I will be your child’s homeroom teacher for the 2021-
2022 school year. I was born and raised in Katy, TX and graduated from Katy
High School. I received my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the
University of Houston. This is my first-year teaching at (insert school name here)
and I could not be more excited to work with each of your children. I love to
travel, watch sports, and spend quality time with my family and friends.
Teaching is my passion and I am grateful that I get to be your child’s teacher this
year.

I will be sending out weekly class updates via e-mail at the beginning of each
week. Be looking out for any e-mails from me as they will contain important
information for the upcoming week.

Ice Breaker: Roll A Topic

I plan on having students do this activity after I introduce myself. I will have my
students sit in a circle around our carpet, and I will project the “Roll a topic”
sheet (shown below) up on the board. Each student takes a turn rolling the dice
and answering the corresponding question.

Classroom Newsletter

Prior to the first day of school I will set up a classroom newsletter through the
website Smore. The website allows me to set up a classroom newsletter that is
easily accessible for my students and their parents. Parents and students will get
to know more about me. The newsletter will provide weekly updates for my class
as well as information about upcoming school events. It will also have my
contact information and my conference hours provided for the parents.

Classroom Blueprint

I utilized Google Drawings to help illustrate my vision of what I want my

classroom layout to look like. The blueprint includes the placement of student
desks, teacher desk, small group table and the bookshelves that house the
classroom library. I plan to switch around the seating chart for different activities.
I have an unobstructed view of the entire classroom from the area where I
placed the kidney shaped table. If I am working in a small group, I can still easily
manage the rest of the class.

Motivational Decorations

I love the idea of having my classroom door decorated. This is the first thing
people would see when walking into my classroom. I want my students to be in
a good mood from the moment they walk through my door. This picture is just
an example of the type of decorations I could put up on my door. I could even
let the students take part in helping me choose the theme.

Attention Getters

This is a great classroom management technique to help manage students. I will

implement it throughout the course of the school year. It is my intent to practice
using attention getters starting on the first day of school. I will continue to
rehearse it throughout the first week of school. The purpose of the students
learning these attention getters is so that I can have every student quiet and
focused on me to give direction. Some attention getters I would use are:

Teacher: “Hear ye, Hear ye”

Students: “All hail the queen”

Teacher: “Hocus Pocus”

Students: “Everybody Focus”

Teacher: “Class, class”

Students: “Yes, yes”

Teacher: “Hands on top”

Students: “That means stop”

Classroom Jobs

I will implement classroom jobs in my future classroom to help students learn responsibility and
promote positive behavior. By allowing the students the opportunity to have a certain “job” in
the classroom it holds them accountable and allows them to contribute to our classroom
community in a positive way. Allowing the students to take on this role also gives them a sense
of pride because they want to do their best. Having a manager for certain jobs would also
maximize transition times and decrease the amount of movement in the classroom during certain
activities.

Some classroom jobs I might have are:

• Energy Hero (turns the lights on/off)
• Calendar Helper (changes the date during our morning meeting)
• Attendance Monitor (puts work in absent folders)

Classroom Hand Signals

I want my students to be able to communicate with me non-verbally to minimize

interruption during whole group or small group instruction. There are different
hand signals depending on what the students need. I would use the same
signals and meanings as the chart below.

I think these short and simple statements hold true to how I want my students
to act in the classroom.

Calm Down Corner/Think Sheet

To help manage student behavior I would implement the use of a Calm Down
Corner and Think Sheets in my classroom. Students can self-regulate their
emotions and ask to go to the calm down corner and will be allowed to go as
appropriate. I will set a timer and the student knows that once that timer goes
off it is time to rejoin the class. If needed for behaviors a think sheet will be
utilized. Think sheets offer the student the opportunity to reflect on their actions
and communicate with the teacher how they feel as a result of their
behavior/outburst and what they might do differently next time. Think sheets will
be signed by the student to hold themselves accountable and will also be
signed by teacher and parent to help hold the student accountable.

ClassDojo

In my future classroom I want to utilize ClassDojo to monitor student behavior.

This can also be used as a means of communication between the parent and
the teacher. The coolest part about ClassDojo is that it operates through real-
time feedback.

*Some districts have a program that is utilized throughout the entire district. I
would use those programs if they are required.

Treasure Box

The treasure box is a reward system that I will utilize to motivate my students
throughout the year. I will have lots of different prizes in the treasure box such as
candy, pencils, stickers, small notepads, spin tops, erasers, etc. Students will be
allowed to go to the treasure box at different points throughout the day. For
example, during stations I will choose a student who was on task and working
diligently to choose an item from the treasure box.

Positive Letters Home

Parents love hearing good things about their child. Sending home positive notes
and affirmations is an important thing to remember to do as a teacher. This will
communicate to the parents that I value their child. This will communicate to the
child that I appreciate them and recognize the good things they do.

Classroom Engagement

Classroom Greeting

Every morning when my students walk into my classroom, I want to make it a

point to stand at the door and greet every one of my students as they walk into
the classroom. This act will help me build relationships with my students. It also
builds a sense of community. Morning greetings look a little different because of
COVID. Some social distancing greetings my students may be able to choose
from are:

• Air Hug
• Elbow Bump
• Namaste
• Wave
• Peace Sign

Early Finishers/ Free Choice

Students will have set options for finishing early. This minimizes students asking
what they can do if they are done with an activity early. Early finishers can read
a book, finish other work, or technology (play educational games). Free choice
will take place on Fridays during our morning routine or during extended
learning time. Some examples of things students can do during free choice is
free draw, read a book, technology (educational games on technological
devices will be allowed), Legos, magnets, etc.
