MAT 233 Vector Functions Review Problems

1. Find a vector function that represents the curve of intersection of the cylinder
x2 + y 2 = 4 and the surface z = xy.

2. Describe the curve r = < t cos(t), t sin(t), t >.

3a.) Find parametric equations of the tangent line to the curve r = < t3, 5t, t4 > at the
point ( - 1, - 5, 1 ).

3b.) At what point on the curve r = < t3, 5t, t4 > is the normal plane parallel to the
plane 12x + 5y + 16z = 3?

4.) At what points does the helix r = < sin t, cos t, t > intersect the sphere
x2 + y2 + z2 = 5?

5.) Find the unit tangent vector T(t) of the function r = < t3 + 3t, t2 + 1, 3t + 4> at
the point t = 1.

6.) A moving particle starts with an initial position r(0) = < 0, 1, 0 >. The velocity
vector is given by v(t) = < 2t, et, 3cos t >. Find the position vector r of the particle.
Find the acceleration vector a(t) of the particle.
7.) Find the point of intersection of the tangent lines to the curve
r = < sin πt, 2 sin πt, cos πt > at the points t = 0 and t = 1/2.

8.) A particle moves around the ellipse (y / 3)2 + (z / 2)2 = 1 in the yz-plane in such
a way that its position at time t is given by r(t) = 3 cos t j + 2 cos t k. Find the
maximum and minimum speeds of the particle.

9.) Find the equation of the plane perpendicular to < cos t, sin t, cos (6t) > at t = π/4.

10.) Find the curvature κ of r(t) = 3 sin t i + 4t j + 3 cos t k. The unit tangent vector
is given by 3/5 cos t i + 4/5 j – 3/5 sin t k.

11.) Find the length of the curve r = < t2, 2t, ln t > from the point (1, 2, 0) to
(e2, 2e, 1).

12.) Let r = < cos t, sin t, et >. Compute v, a, aT, and aN .

13.) Suppose an object moves so that its acceleration is given by

a = <-3 cos t, -2 sin t, 0>. At time t = 0, the object is at < 3, 0, 0 > and its velocity
vector is < 0, 2, 1 >. Find v(t) and r
