Administrative Principles
Sample Short-Answer Questions (Midterm Examination)

This set of sample questions is representative of the sort of short-answer questions you will
encounter on the actual midterm. However, it is not representative of the number of questions
you can expect—the actual midterm will have 8 short-answer questions of which you must
answer 6.
Suggested answers are provided on the next page.

1. List and briefly identify the three kinds of skills companies look for in managers.
2. List and briefly define the four characteristics of successful organizational cultures.
3. Briefly define and explain the relationships among environmental change, environmental
complexity, resource scarcity, and environmental uncertainty.
Answer Key

1. When companies look for employees who would be good managers, they look for individuals
who have technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills, as well as the motivation to
manage. Technical skills refers to the ability to apply the specialized procedures, techniques,
and knowledge required to get the job done. Human skills are the ability to work well with
others. Conceptual skills relate to being able to see the organization as a whole—to
appreciate how the different parts of the company affect one another and how the company
fits into or is affected by its external environment.
2. The four characteristics of successful organizational cultures are
 adaptability (the ability to notice and respond to changes in the organization’s
environment)
 involvement (the promotion of employee participation in decision making, often through
enhanced autonomy, accountability, and responsibility)
 a clear vision (a company’s purpose or reason for existing)
 consistency (a culture in which the company actively defines and teaches organizational
values, beliefs, and attitudes).
3. There are three basic characteristics of changing external environments, including
 environmental change (the rate at which a company’s general and specific environments
change)
 environmental complexity (the number of external factors in the environment that affect
organizations)
 resource scarcity (the degree to which an organization’s external environment has an
abundance or scarcity of critical organizational resources).
Environmental change and complexity, as well as resources (e.g., munificence) affect
environmental uncertainty, which is how well managers can understand or predict the
external changes and trends affecting their businesses.
