Lab Exam

1. The document provides instructions for a lab test involving analyzing signals in Multisim simulation environment. Students are asked to construct circuits, set function generator parameters, and take screenshots of the oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer displays. 2. In Task 1, students generate a sinusoidal signal and measure its frequency, power, and signal to noise ratio. In Task 2, they generate an amplitude modulated signal and measure the carrier power, sideband power, and calculate the modulation index. 3. Students are instructed to show their work and screenshots in the provided spaces. The test is designed to evaluate students' ability to analyze signals in the time and frequency domains using oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers in Multis

CNET304 Lab Test (10%)

Set-A
Fall 2020

Student Name: Nehal Gupta Student ID: 301104406

Section: 009

Instructions:
- Write your name, section, and ID above. Missing the name, section, and student ID
results zero in lab test.
- This test must be your independent work and in Multisim simulation environment.
- Do not forget to change Multisim file name as instructed. Failure to do so will give
you zero in the lab test.
- Set any frequency to the signal generator according to the instruction.
- Copy and paste all screenshots in the space provided. Make sure that all
screenshots are clearly visible and do not hide Multisim file name.
- Show all calculation steps in the space provided.
- This lab test is one hour longer and 10 mins extra for exam file submission. So
total time is 70 minutes. I will not accept your exam through mail if the drop-
box is closed.
- After finishing the exam submit your file in e-centennial drop-box named “Lab
Test”.

Task-1 [5 marks]:
1. From the Start window of your computer or a shortcut on the desktop, run NI-
Multisim. Then go to File, go to Save As and change file name as: Your first and
last name student ID Lab Test. For example: Ahmed Reza 120456785 Lab Test.
Make sure that when you take screenshot, any display should not hide Multisim file
name.
2. Construct the following schematic:
XSC1
XSA1
XFG1
Agilent Tektronix

P 1 2 3 4 T
IN T
G
3. Turn on the Agilent Function Generator (XFG1). Select a sinusoidal waveform. Set
the amplitude to 0.5 Vpp. Set the frequency to 2x0.00 kHz, where x is the last digit of
your student ID. For example, if your student ID is 3xxxxxx4, set the frequency to
240.00 kHz. Take a screenshot of Agilent Function Generator display showing your
frequency and paste it in space below.

4. Turn on the Oscilloscope and adjust Ch. 1 volts/div 200 mV and timebase scale 2
µs to have 2-3 cycles of the waveform displayed in the Oscilloscope screen.
5. On the Spectrum Analyzer, set the Span to 1 MHz, Start frequency to 0Hz, and
End frequency to 1 MHz. Set the Amplitude to dBm, Range 20 dB/Div, Ref. 0
dB/Div, and Resolution to 5 kHz. Run the simulation, put the marker on top of
your signal in SA display and take screenshot showing all 3 displays- Signal
Generator, Oscilloscope and SA and paste it below:

After running the simulation if you don’t get proper signal display in SA, stop simulation
and click Enter button in Frequency section of SA. Then set the parameters again and
run the simulation. Pressing Enter button will refresh everything.
6. Now put the marker on the grass (noise floor) in SA display, take screenshot and
paste it below:

7. In the following table, record signal and noise power in dBm and fill out the
values from necessary calculations. Show all calculation steps in the relevant
box.

Task-2 [5 marks]:

1. Construct the following schematic:

XSC1
XSA1
XFG1
Agilent Tektronix

P 1 2 3 4 T
IN T
G

2. Turn on the Agilent Function Generator (XFG1). Generate AM signal with a

sinewave carrier signal of fC=8x.0 kHz, amplitude VC=0.5 Vpp, modulated by
sinewave modulating signal with fm=4 kHz at 80% modulation index (depth).
Where x is the last digit of your student ID. For example, if your student ID is
3xxxxxx4, set the carrier frequency to 84.00 kHz.

3. Display the AM signal in time domain (oscilloscope) and frequency domain

(spectrum analyzer).

4. Turn on the Oscilloscope and adjust Ch. 1 vertical sensitivity to see the AM
signal over 4-6 vertical divisions (check p-p max ~0.5 Vpp or less). Adjust the
time base to see 2-3 cycles of the AM waveform displayed in the Oscilloscope
screen.

5. On the Spectrum Analyzer, set the Span to 100 KHz, Start frequency to 75
kHz, End frequency to 125 kHz and the Amplitude to dBm. Set the Range to
20 dB/Div, Ref. -10 dB/Div, and 500 Hz Resolution.

6. In Oscilloscope display set two cursors on the AM waveform to measure A

(max p-p voltage of the AM signal). In the SA display set the marker on top of
carrier signal. Now take the screenshot showing all 3 displays- Signal
Generator display with carrier frequency, Oscilloscope display with
measuring A and SA display with carrier signal. (If you don’t get signal in SA
properly, stop the simulation and press Enter button to enter all parameters
again)
7. In Oscilloscope display set two cursors on the AM waveform to measure B
(min p-p voltage of the AM signal). In the SA display set the marker on top of
LSB or USB signal. Now take the screenshot showing all 3 displays- Signal
Generator display with carrier frequency, Oscilloscope display with
measuring B and SA display with LSB/USB signal.

8. Record the following AM measurements in the Table below:

AM Parameter Measured Value

Max. Vp-p of AM Signal (mV): A 430 mV

Min. Vp-p of AM Signal (mV): B 72 mV

Carrier Power, PC (dBm) -30.877 dBm

LSB or USB Power, PSB (dBm) -32.433 dBm

AM signal calculations: Show all steps
Calculate AM signal modulation index (%m) by using the values from table-
8

A- B
m=
A + B , then express m in %. Notice that this calculated %m should be
close to the modulation index value set in Agilent Signal generator.

  M= 430-72/430+72 *100
