Layer Stacking1

The document describes steps to preprocess satellite images in ArcMap, including: 1) Stacking bands of a downloaded satellite image 2) Creating a false color image from the stacked bands 3) Removing the black background from satellite images permanently by assigning the background pixel value of 0 as the NoData value.

Lab- Preprocessing of satellite images

Layer Stacking in ArcMap

Objectives:

Through this lab the user will

1) learn to stack the bands of downloaded image

2) learn to make a false colour image

3) learn to erase the black background of satellite image.

Checking the meatadata

1)The TIF files represents images captured in different bands.

The file naming convention for Landsat LPGS-processed GeoTIFF data

is as follows:

LXSS_LLLL_PPPRRR_YYYYMMDD_yyyymmdd_CC_TX_BN.TIF where:

L = Landsat

X = Sensor (E for ETM+ data; T for TM data; M for MSS)

SS = Satellite (07 = Landsat 7, 05 = Landsat 5, etc.)

LLLL = processing level (L1TP for Precision Terrain;

L1GT for Systematic Terrain;

L1GS for Systematic only)

PPP = starting path of the product

RRR = starting and ending rows of the product

YYYY = acquisition year

MM = acquisition month

DD = acquisition day

yyyy = processing year

mm = processing month

dd = processing day

CC = collection number

TX = collection category (RT for real-time; T1 for Tier 1;

T2 for Tier 2)

BN = file type:

B1 = band 1

B2 = band 2

B3 = band 3

B4 = band 4

B5 = band 5

B6_VCID_1 = band 6L (low gain) (ETM+)

B6_VCID_2 = band 6H (high gain) (ETM+)

B6 = band 6 (TM and MSS)

B7 = band 7

B8 = band 8 (ETM+)

MTL = Level-1 metadata

GCP = ground control points

TIF = GeoTIFF file extension

2.Now we are going to stack these bands in ArcMap. To do that Start ArcMap. Add tif files
representing different bands using Add Data button. Add tiff files B1 to B4.
3. If prompted for “pyramid layer needs to be created.” Click yes to create pyramid layer.

4. You may prompted to create pyramid layer for each of the TIFF files. After creating all
pyramid layers, images will be added to to your QGIS map canvas.
5. In the main Menu bar Click on Windows>Image analysis. The image analysis dialogue box
will open where you can see the bands B1 to B4.

6. In the Image analysis window select layers B1 to B5 to stack.

7. Go to processing tool> Click on Composite bands to Stack.

8. A composite layer will be created and displayed in your monitor.

18. Right click the composite layer>data> export data. give a proper name. save it in tiff format.
Click Save.Click Yes to any message prompted.

9. Click Yes to add the exported data to the map as a layer.

10. The stacked image will be displayed.

Task 1:

Copy and paste your stacked image here.

11. How to make a false colour image

Right click on your Stacked.tif image> Properties> Symbology. Since Band 5 is the INR band
channelize this band through red channel. In this case as every band is showing as band 1, you
have to decide on band number on the basis of order you used while putting them for stacking.
Band 4 through green channel and band 3 through blue channel. Click Apply.

The false colour image will be displayed in your ArcMap canvas. The healthy vegetation will
appear as bright red.

Task 2:

Paste your false colour image below.

How can you get rid of black background of Landsat image permanently?

12. go to main menu>select the identity tool. Click on the black background of the image notice
that the pixel values are 0, whereas the pixel values are different within the image.

13. First, we get rid of exiting images displayed on ArcMap canvas. Go to main menu click on
New Document. Click on the Blank Map and OK.

A blank ArcMap canvas will appear.

14. Go to ArcCatalog> navigate to your stacked image.

15. Right click on the image> Properties. Raster Dataset Properties window will open. Click on
General tab> Raster Information> NoData Value. Click on Edit button. NoData Editor window
will open. You will see a value. If you don’t see any value, click on Compute button to compute
the value.

16. Click on the data to edit and type 0.

17. Click OK. Back in the Raster Dataset Properties window notice that the NoData Value
changes to 0.
18. Click OK. The NoData Value changed in the image. Now drag and drop the image from the
catalogue to ArcMap Canvas. You will see the black background has disappeared.

19. click on the background with identity tool. You will see it’s showing NoData.
Task 3-

Paste your stacked image with no background value below.
