Test I – Problem Solving

Show your solution:

1. A vapor compression refrigeration system has a 30 KW motor driving the compressor. The compressor inlet pressure
and temperature are 64.17 kPa and 20℃ respectively and discharges pressure of 960 kPa. Saturated liquid enters the
expansion valve. Using Freon 12 as refrigerant, determine the capacity of the unit in tons of refrigeration.
From R-12 tables and chart:
h1 = 345 kJ/kg
h2 = 398 kJ/kg
h3 = h 4 = 238.5 kJ/kg Ans. Tons of refrigeration = 17.144
2. Milk must be received and cooled from 80℉ to 38℉ in 5 hrs. If 4000 gallons of fresh milk received having SG of 1.03
and Cp = 0.935 Btu/lb-℉ , find the refrigeration capacity.
Ans. TR = 22.50

3. Calculate the bore in mm of a single-acting, 6 cylinder ammonia compressor running at 1200 rpm to compress 700
kg/hr of refrigerant which vaporized at -15℃ , given the following:
Bore and Stroke = unity
Volumetric Efficiency = 70%
Specific Volume of ammonia = 8.15 ft 3/lb at 5℉
Ans. D = 114 mm

4. A 100 x 200 mm ammonia compressor with a compression efficiency of 80 percent operates with a suction pressure of
291.6 kPa and a condenser pressure of 1204 kPa at 23r/s. The refrigerant cools 102 kg/min of brine by 8 degrees in the
brine cooler. The specific heat of the brine is 3.14 kJ/kg. ℃ . Electric input to the motor driving the compressor is 14.33
kW. Motor efficiency at this load is 92 per cent. Assuming 5 per cent of the useful refrigerating effect is lost by brine
cooler from the room; determine the mechanical and actual volumetric efficiencies of the compressor. (h2 = 1653 kJ/kg).
BW = 13.18 kW
h1 = 1450.2 kJ/kg
h2 = 1653 kJ/kg
h3 = h 4 = 346.6 kJ/kg
V 1 = 417.5 L/sec Ans. 78.1% and 46.91%
