QUESTION 1
The wooden box A is being lifted by moving the roller at C downward with a constant speed
of vC = 1.75 m/s along the guide as shown in Figure Q1. When the roller is at B, the box rests
on the ground. Determine the velocity of the box at the instant s = 0.75 m. Ignore the size of
the pulley. (CO1-PO1)(C4)

derivatives)

QUESTION 2
Figure Q2 shows a conveyor belt system, two small baskets made of woven strips of bamboo
connected with a cable are discharge with a velocity of 0.35 m/s onto a ramp by the upper
conveyor belt shown. Knowing that the coefficient of kinetic friction between blocks M1 and M2
and the surface ABCD is μk,1=0.12 and μk,2=0.3 respectively. Assume that the two baskets as
one system whereby they move collectively together from A to D. Mass M1=2.0 kg and mass
M2=4.0 kg.
(a) Using Newton’s Second Law, calculate the acceleration and force in the cable in terms of
theta, 𝜃 if the baskets move down from B to C. (CO1-PO1) (C3)
(10 marks)
(b) Using work-energy method, compute the angle θ if the two baskets are to arrive at D with
a moving speed of 0.2 m/s. Determine the velocity of the metal blocks at point C. (CO1-
PO1) (C4)

(c) Using impulse-momentum method, determine the time taken from C to D. (CO1-PO1) (C4)

QUESTION 3
Pulley B is being driven by the motorized pulley A that is rotating at ωA = (‘INSERT THE LAST
TWO DIGITS OF YOUR STUDENT ID’) rad/s as shown in Figure Q3. At time t = 0, the current
in the motor is cut off, and friction in the bearings causes the pulleys to coast to a stop. The
angular acceleration of A during the deceleration is αA = -3t rad/s2, where t is in seconds.
Assuming that the drive belt does not slip on the pulleys. Given r1 = 0.13 m and r2 = 0.25 m.
(b) Determine the angular displacement of B during the period of coasting. (CO2-PO2)(C4)
