QUESTION 1
The double pulley in Figure Q1 has a centroidal moment of inertia of 0.574 kgm 2 with an
outer radius of 350 mm and an inner radius of 250 mm. Neglecting friction of the bearing.
Given the mass of block A, mA= 20 kg.
a) Using Newton’s Second Law, express the equations of motion for block A, pulley B,
and Mr. Ahmad. Knowing that the coefficient of kinetic friction between Mr. Ahmad’s
foot and the floor is μk=0.3 and consider the reaction force of Mr. Ahmad as one
system. Calculate the acceleration of block A if velocity for block A is 2.56 m/s. Using
the Work-Energy Method, solve the distance, h of block A before it comes to rest.
Consider Mr. Ahmad’s weight to be the same as you. Please write down your
weight in the answer script. (CO1-PO1) (C4)

b) Using the Impulse-Momentum Method, determine the velocity of block A and B, 3
seconds after the system is released from rest. (CO2-PO2) (C3)

QUESTION 2
b) Figure Q2(b) shows that the 4 kg block A is supported by the 20 kg disk that is
pinned at its mass center O. Determine the period and frequency of the resulting
motion of the system if the belt which passes over the disk is not allowed to slip at its
contacting surface. (CO2-PO2) (C4)
