Module 2 SW4 PDF

The document contains 10 practice problems related to open channel flow. The problems involve calculating uniform flow parameters like velocity, depth, and discharge using Manning's, Kutter's, and Bazin's equations. Parameters given include channel size, slope, roughness, and flow rates. The problems require determining dimensions, flows, depths and other quantities for circular, rectangular, trapezoidal and triangular channel sections.

Module 2

Seatwork 4
Problem 1
• What uniform flow exists in a circular brick conduit 1.50m in
diameter when the depth of flow is 60 cm, if it is laid on a slope of
0.0005, using (a) Manning’s, (b) Kutter’s and (c) Bazin’s ? Use n =
0.015 and m =0.29.
Problem 2
• What uniform flow will occur in the cross section shown, if its is laid
on a slope of 0.0005 and has n =0.017, using (a) Manning’s and (b)
Kutter’s
Problem 3
• At what depth will 4.25 m3/sec flow uniformly in a rectangular
channel 4m wide with rubble-lined masonry and laid on a slope of 1
to 4000? Use n = 0.017
Problem 4
• Calculate the depth at which 0.70 m3/s will flow uniformly in a
smooth cement-lined circular conduit 2m in diameter laid on a slope
of 1 to 7000. Use n = 0.010
Problem 5
• A trapezoidal canal of 1 and 2 and having n = 0.017 is to carry a
uniform flow of 35 m3/sec on a slope 0.005 at a depth of 1.50m.
What base width is required
Problem 6
• A trapezoidal canal has one side vertical and the other sloping at 45
deg. Its discharge is 25 m3/sec and its mean velocity is 1 m/sec. If the
slope is at its barest minimum, find the dimensions of the section.
Problem 7
• The triangular channel (n = 0.013) shown in the figure is to carry
water at a flow rate of 38.5 m3/s. Calculate the critical (a) depth, (b)
velocity and (c) slope.
Problem 8
• A corrugated metal pipe of 500mm diameter flows half-full at a slope
of 0.005. what is the flow rate for this condition
Problem 9
• An open channel is to be designed to carry 1 m^3/s at a slope of
0.0065. the channel material has an n value of 0.011. find the most
efficient cross section for semicircular, trapezoidal, and rectangular
section.
Problem 10
• A flow of 10.9 m3/s passes over a suppressed weir which is 4.88m
long. The total depth upstream from the weir must not exceed 2.44
m. Using C’ = 1.85. (a) Compute the velocity of approach. (b)
Compute the head of the weir. (c) Determine the height to which the
crest?
