Study The Following Instruments. Be Able To Identify and Know Its Uses
1. Mosquito curve- A small, straight or curved hemostatic forceps used to hold delicate tissue or
compress a bleeding vessel.
2. Mosquito straight- A small, straight or curved hemostatic forceps used to hold delicate tissue or
compress a bleeding vessel.
3. Allis- The allis clamp is surgical instrument with sharp teeth, used to hold or grasp heavy tissue.
It is also used to grasp fascia and soft tissues such as breast or bowel tissue.
4. Kelly- primarily used for clamping large blood vessels or manipulating heavy tissue. They may
also be used for soft tissue dissection. This instrument can be used as a clamp, heat sink, or third
hand.
5. Ovum forcep- are commonly used to remove placental fragments inside the uterus. It is also
used as a hemostat or a clamping instrument.
6. Needle holder- A needle holder, also called needle driver, is a surgical instrument, similar to a
hemostat, used by doctors and surgeons to hold a suturing needle for closing wounds during
suturing and surgical procedures. The parts of a simple needle holder are the jaws, the joint and
the handles.
7. Adson- Forceps toothed at the tip used for handling dense tissue, such as in skin closures. Also
called locking forceps, these are ratcheted instruments used to hold tissue or objects, or provide
hemostasis. Can be traumatic or atraumatic.
8. Tissue forcep- Tissue forceps are used in surgical procedures for grasping tissue. Often, the tips
have "teeth" to securely hold a tissue. Typically tissue forceps are designed to minimize damage
to biological tissue.
9. Thumb forcep- Thumb forceps are spring forceps used by compression between your thumb and
forefinger and are used for grasping, holding or manipulating body tissue. They are non-ratchet
style. For example, you could use thumb forceps to hold or move tissue during surgery or to
move dressings.
10. Blade holder- The surgical blade holder and knife of the present invention is ideally suited for
selected surgical procedures where maximum blade control is desired in areas of limited surgical
access such as intra-oral surgical procedures and particularly on the gums.
11. Metzenbaum scissor- Metzenbaum scissors are surgical scissors designed for cutting delicate
tissue and blunt dissection. The scissors come in variable lengths and have a relatively long
shank-to-blade ratio. They are constructed of stainless steel and may have tungsten carbide
cutting surface inserts.
12. Mayo scissor- Mayo scissors used for dissection are placed in tissue with the tips closed.
13. Suture scissor- As straight-bladed Mayo scissors are also used for cutting sutures, they are also
referred to as "suture scissors". Straight-bladed Mayo scissors are designed for cutting body
tissues near the surface of a wound.
14. Army navy retractor- The Army Navy Retractor, sometimes called US or USA Army Retractor, is
used for shallow or superficial wounds. It can be used to retract skin or bones. The Army Navy
Retractor is a basic surgical instrument included in most minor and major surgical set.
15. Richardson- A Richardson retractor is a handheld medical instrument used during chest or
abdominal surgery. Such retractors feature a handle and a long shaft with a wide hook, known
as a blade, at the end. Surgeons use the blade to grasp soft tissue such as skin, muscle, or
internal organs.
16. Bladder retractor- An internal bladder retractor was used to facilitate dissection of the vascular
pedicles during laparoscopic radical cystectomy in a female patient. Results: The application of
the retractor is easy and it allows more precise control of the vascular pedicles and ureters.
17. OR light handle- Surgical light handle covers and surgical camera covers are used with surgical
light handles for use with surgical lights in the Operating Room (OR). With a sterile, flexible
surgical light handle cover securely attached to the surgical light handle, surgeons and OR staff
can safely maneuver the light without causing the light handle to become unsterile.
18. Babcock- Babcock Forceps are finger ring, ratcheted, non-perforating forceps used to grasp
delicate tissue. They are frequently used with intestinal and laparotomy procedures. Babcock
Forceps are similar to Allis forceps. However, they may be considered less traumatic due to their
wider, rounded grasping surface.
19. Vaginal retractor- A vaginal retractor is an instrument that can actively separate the edges of the
vagina, or can hold back underlying tissues, so to provide access into or exposure of the inner
parts of the female reproductive system.
20. Vaginal curette- During uterine curettage, an instrument is used to scrape or suction the uterine
lining to diagnose and/or treat abnormal bleeding or to remove products of conception. If not
already dilated, the cervix must first be opened mechanically or chemically.
21. Hysterometer- Straight Hysterometer Used to measure uterus depth. It is straight, slightly
conical (from 3 to 5 mm o.d.) and centimeter marked. Rounded tip allows a comfortable
insertion through the cervical canal and malleable ... Uterine Sounds are malleable, disposable,
and ready to use for dilating and measuring the cervix.
22. Tenaculum- A tenaculum is a surgical instrument, usually classified as a type of forceps. It
consists of a slender sharp-pointed hook attached to a handle and is used mainly in surgery for
seizing and holding parts, such as blood vessels. ... Seizing and holding arteries in various surgical
procedures.
23. Uterine forcep- Long, curved forceps used to grasp the uterus during a procedure. Uterine
forceps have blunt serrations, and may be used to remove tissue or insert packing.
24. Senn retractor- Senn retractors are double ended retractors used in surgical procedures. One
end is typically L shaped, and the other has three bent prongs. The pronged ends come in sharp
and dull tips. They are regularly used in hand and foot surgeries.
25. Vaginal speculum- A speculum is a duck-bill-shaped device that doctors use to see inside a
hollow part of your body and diagnose or treat disease. One common use of the speculum is for
vaginal exams. Gynecologists use it to open the walls of the vagina and examine the vagina and
cervix.
26. Bone curette- This instrument is used to carefully smooth bone. With a small spoon on the end
of the tool similar to that of an ice-cream scoop, a curette allows the surgeon to scrape away
bone. The spoon of the bone curette has durable, sharp edges. Its handle may be large and
thick, taking up the entire hand, or small and thin.
27. Kidney basin- A kidney dish (British English) or emesis basin (American English) is a shallow basin
with a kidney-shaped base and sloping walls used in medical and surgical wards to receive soiled
dressings and other medical waste. ... The disposable version of the kidney dish was invented by
Bessie Virginia Blount.
28. Orthopedic pan- orthopedic instrument tray
29. Towel clip- The Mayo towel clips are designed to hold sterile towels as close to the incision as
possible. They are also used to fix suction tubes, diathermy wires and laparoscopic cables with
the draping materials.
30. Malleable- These retractors are made from malleable stainless steel, allowing for easy
modification of retractor angle and shape. The blades are available in a variety of sizes
depending on the surgeon's need and are commonly used during orbital dissection to keep
orbital fat out of the surgical field.
