SECTION A – 16 marks

1. In ONE clear sentence identify the main issue under discussion in this scenario. [1 Mark]

The friends are debating the issue of whether the scrap metal industry should be reopened

2. In your opinion, which of the three friends best exhibits the characteristics of a critical
thinker? Give reasons for your response. [2 Marks]
Sheldon. He looks at all the evidence and arguments and is able to see the issue from both
friends’ perspectives

3. State ONE possible assumption that could be drawn from the statement Curtis makes about
women in last half of section 6 [1 Mark]

His assumption is that women are not able to be reasonable about serious issues so men should
not discuss such issues with them
4. Do you believe that ‘blindly biased’ is an apt description of Curtis’ line of reasoning. Give
reasons in support of your response [1 Mark]

No. While he is biased and unreasonable in some of his views, particularly as it relates to the
social function of the trade and employment creation, he does have good arguments too in
support of his position.

(Some consideration may have to be given for students who answer yes, but the explanation must
be reasonable)

friends that the reopening of the scrap metal trade is beneficial to the country. [3 Marks]

OR

Minor Premise: The scrap metal trade provides employment to women with many children and
young men who may otherwise be criminals
Conclusion: Reopening the scrap meatal trade will be beneficial to the country

6. Identify and construct the argument by analogy Sheldon uses in section 7 [3 Marks]

Premise: Developed countries with more law abiding citizens have problems with the scrap
metal trade
Premise: Jamaica is a developing country with less law abiding citizens
Conclusion: Jamaica will have problems if the scrap metal trade is reopened

7. Identify ONE instance of the use of the following appeals in the passage. [2 Marks]

Section 6, line 4
Section 6, lines 5 – 6

Section 4, lines 3 – 5
Marjorie: Section 2, lines 3 – 5
Sheldon: Section 7 of the passage
Section 8 of the passage

8. Identify and construct the type of argument Curtis uses in sections 3 & 4 to convince Marjorie
that reopening the trade is not a good idea. [3 Marks]

Premise: The trade has cost one billion in losses over a couple of years

Premise: Companies suffered severe dislocations as a result of the scrap metal trade

Or

Premise: The country’s infrastructure has repeatedly been stolen as a result of the trade
