Image Segmentation: A Literature Review: Project Proposal

This document proposes a project to review image segmentation techniques. It will explore segmentation methods like region-based, model-based, edge-based, and clustering approaches. The importance of image segmentation and state-of-the-art techniques will be examined. Applications include remote sensing, medical imaging, object detection, and content retrieval. The timeline outlines tasks from topic selection to the final presentation to be completed by mid-November 2020.

Image Segmentation: A Literature Review

Project Proposal
Abstract:
Segmentation is considered to be one of the main techniques in image processing. It splits a
digital image into multiple regions in order to analyze them [2]. It can also be used to
distinguish different objects in the image. In technical terms, it partitions an input image into
non-overlapping, homogeneous and connected regions such that “union of any two spatially
adjacent regions is not homogenous” [1].
In this project we will do a through review of what image segmentation is and what are some of
the techniques we can use to segment an image like region based, model based, edge based,
clustering etc. We will touch on the importance of image segmentation and see which state of
the art techniques are available and will look at their results.

Motivation:
Machine vision has been introduced in variety of industrial applications, allowing the
automation of tasks performed so far by human operators [3]. Segmentation is a key image
processing technique which has wide variety of applications. The objective of segmentation is
to simplify and change the representation of an image into something that is more meaningful
and easier to analyze. Segmentation basically used to detect the objects, boundaries and other
relevant data in the digital images [4].
Image segmentation plays a crucial role in many medical-imaging applications, by automating
or facilitating the delineation of anatomical structures and other regions of interest [5]. Some
other key applications of segmentation include,
 Remote Sensing
 Medical Imaging: Identifying tumors, anomalies etc
 Object and facial detections
 Machine vision
 Content based image retrieval
 Video surveillance
Due to these interesting and diverse applications we have chosen image segmentation as our
topic of interest for this project.
