Tutorial Problems

Instructor: Prof. Sanjay Soni

Q1: Consider an Indoor wireless LAN with fc=900 MHz, cell of radius 100m and non-directional
antennas. Under the free-space path loss model, compute the transmitter power required such that all
the receiving terminals within the cell receives a minimum of 10 micro W. How does this change if
the system frequency changes to 10 GHz.

Q2: If the effective aperture area of the receiver antenna is 0.03 square meter and the operating
frequency is 2GHz. The Tx antenn is assumed to be omnidirectional and transmitter power is 10
dBW. The transmitter and receiver are situated in a open area where free-space path loss model is
applicable. Compute the received power in dB. Assume the distance between Tx and Rx to be 1 Km.
Also compute the free-space path loss in dB.

Q3: If a signal in one path traverses 2 m longer distance than the other path and operating frequency
is 10 GHz, compute the phase difference of both the path. If a single tone sinusoidal signal with zero
initial phase is transmitted, plot the resultant signal at the mobile receiver.

Q4: Consider a two-ray model with the height of the transmitter as 10 m and that of receiver as 3 m.
The distance between Tx and Rx is 200m. Compute the distance of a reflecting point on the ground
from the transmitter. Also compute the phase difference between two signals reaching the receiver.

Q5: Consider the following relation between Tx field and Rx field

Et
Er= exp (− jk0 ×R )
R
Compute the field at the receiver using above model assuming transmitting field as 5 V/m,
transmitter, receiver height as 10 m and 3 m respectively, frequency of operation 2GHz and ground
reflection coefficient as 0.6. Assume separation between Tx and Rx as 500 m.

Q6: Determine the critical distance for two-ray model in urban scenario (ht=10 m, hr=3m) and for
indoor scenario (ht=3m hr=3m) at 2GHz. Comment on the result and usefulness of two-ray model
with constraint on critical distance in cellular planning.

Q7: T-R separation = 5 km (mobile located 5 km away from BS). Mobile uses a vertical l/4
monopole antenna (gain = 2.55 dB). E-field at a distance of 1 km = 10 -3 v/m, fc = 900 MHz. Find the
received power at the mobile, assuming h t= 50 m, hr = 1.5 m.

Q8: Differentiate between parallel and perpendicular polarizarion with suitable examples. Compute
the value of reflection coefficient for the scenario having h t= 100 m, hr = 2 m for both parallel and
perpendicular polarizations.

Q9: Consider a transmitter which radiates a sinusoidal carrier frequency of 900 MHz. For a vehicle
moving 50 km/h, compute the received carrier frequency if the mobile is moving
(i) Directly towards the Tx
(ii) Directly away from the Tx
(iii) In the direction which is perpendicular to the arrival of the transmitted signal.

Q10: Consider the following figure. Regarding figure (a), consider a Tx which radiates a sinusoidal
carrier frequency of 1850 MHz. For a vehicle moving with 60 kmph, compute the received carrier
frequency in each path if the Rx has moved to a new coordinate (8,0). Assume the position of
reflection point remains same. Regarding figure (b), compute the Doppler shift if the Rx is moving in
a circle with Tx at the center.

Q11: Consider the following figure with two multipath components. Determine the probability
distribution of the magnitude and phase of the received signal if systems encounters N number of
multipath components.

Figure 3: Channel with two paths

Q12: Assume a discrete channel impulse response is used to model urban radio channels with excess
delays as large as 100 μs and microcellular channels with excess delays no longer than 4 μs. If the no.
of multipath bin is fixed at 64, find

(a) ∆ τ
(b) The maximum BW that the two modal can accurately present.

Q13: Assume a mobile travelling at a velocity of 10m/s receives two multipath components at a
carrier frequency fc 100MHz. The first component is assumed to arrive at receiver with τ =0, intial
phase 0° and power of -70dBm and the second component which is 3dB weaker than the first
component is assumed to arrive atτ =1 μs , also with an initial phase of 0° . If the mobile moves
directly towards the direction of arrival of first component and directly away from the direction of
arrival of second component, compute the narrowband instantaneous power at the time interval of
0.1s from 0 s to 0.5s. Compute the average narrowband power received over this observation interval.
Q14: Consider Figure 2 of multipath scenario assuming four multipath scenario. The power and time-
delay of each path are given as follows.

( P0 )dB=−20 dB, τ 0 =0 μs ,
( P1 )dB=−10 dB, τ 0 =1 μs ,
( P2 )dB=−10 dB, τ 0=2μs

( P3 )dB=0 dB, τ 0 =5μs

Calculate the mean delay and rms delay spread for the multipath profile given in the following figure.
Estimate the 50% coherence BW of the channel. If the data rate of 1 Mbps is transmitted through the
channel, (i) determine whether the channel is frequency selective or not (ii) will this channel be
suitable for GSM application?

Q15: In the following problem, the power received for individual paths are 0 dB, -10 dB, -10 dB, -20
dB, -20 dB for multipath components 0,1,2,3 and 4 respectively. Find

(i) Mean Delay

(ii) The rms delay spread

Find the coherence BW of the channel.
