DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before
attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or
related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING &
ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT
SYSTEMS article.

The instrument cluster is available in two versions. The mid-line version is equipped with a mini-check system,
and the high-line version is equipped with a multifunction monitor with LCD display. See Fig. 1 . The mini-
check system monitors the brake system, coolant temperature, fuel level, engine oil pressure and ambient
temperature. The multifunction monitor incorporates the auto-check system with radio frequency and telephone
data display, ambient temperature display and on-board computer display.

Instrument cluster functions are controlled by an internal microprocessor with OBD-II capabilities. If faults
occur within instrument cluster components or inputs, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be set. DTCs are
retrieved using a scan tool. If LCD displays "dEF" (defect), the instrument cluster has detected an internal
malfunction and must be replaced.

SELECTING FUNCTIONS .
{ Select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08. See READ MEASURING VALUE BLOCK
(FUNCTION 08) .
{ Select channel 001 and carry out road test.

WARNING: z When taking test readings while the vehicle is moving, VAG 1551
Scan Tool must always be secured to the rear seat and operated
from this position.
z DO NOT USE VAS 5051 during a road test.

If the speedometer vehicle speed sensor signal is indicated on the VAG 1551 Scan Tool display, the instrument
cluster is faulty and must be replaced.

If the speedometer vehicle speed sensor signal is NOT displayed on the VAG 1551 Scan Tool display, the
signal must be checked at the multi-pin terminal on the rear of the instrument cluster as follows:

z Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

z Connect test box VAG 1598 to blue 32-pin connector using adapter cable VAG 1598/25.
z Perform an acoustic continuity test of wire and sensor using VAG1526 multimeter between socket 28 and
socket 9 (load Ground)
z Switch ignition off.

NOTE: For the Audi TT, the vehicle speed signal is generated by a hall effect sensor.
Therefore, there must be battery voltage (about 12V) at the speedometer Vehicle
Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22- during test.

Test:

Signal of continuity tester must switch off and on repeatedly while vehicle is rolled back and forth
approximately 1 meter (1 yard).

If test is not OK:

z Check wiring connection to speedometer vehicle speed sensor using applicable wiring diagram.

If test is OK:

z Replace speedometer vehicle speed sensor.
