Hochschule Offenburg - University of Applied Sciences Written Examination Digital Signals and Systems - CMEI WS2006/07

This document contains instructions for a written examination on digital signals and systems. It includes 3 questions: 1. Determine the order of spectral roll-off and DC value and energy of a given signal u(t). 2. For a given digital system transfer function H(z): find poles and zeros, determine stability, whether it is FIR or IIR, calculate impulse response h[k] for k=0-4, and determine output y[k] for k=0-4 given input u[k]. 3. Design a digital FIR notch filter with specified notch frequency and poles/zeros, give transfer function, calculate frequency response at DC, and sketch the signal flow graph.

Written examination Digital Signals and Systems - CMEI WS2006/07

12.02.2007, 60 min.
You may use: handwritten notes 2 pages DIN A4, pocket calculator;
no books, no old exams, no telecommunication equipment ofany kind!
The terms "digital system", "sampled-data system", and "discrete-time system" may be
regarded as synonyms.

1.: Given is the signal u(t) according to fig. 1 .

u(t)=Ofort<-3, u(t)=-2for-3~t<0, u(t)=e-tfort~O.

Determine the order n of the "spectral high-frequency roll-off', i.e., the magnitude spectrum
V(t) ofu(t) is proportional to 1/f n for high frequencies.

Determine the DC value (= Value of spectrum V(t) for f=O), and the energy W ofu(t).

2.: A digital system has a transfer function H(z):

H(z) = 3*z-2
Z2 -1.3* z +0.4

2.1: Find the poles and zeros ofH(z) and sketch them into the z plane.
Is this system stable or unstable? (state why!)

2.2: Is this the transfer function of a FlR or IlR system? (state why!)

2.3: Determine the inpulse response sequence h[k] for, at least, k = 0, 1 ,2,3 ,4.

2.4: This system has an input sequence u[k] according to fig. 2.

Determine, by convolution, the output sequence y[k] for, at least, k = 0, 1 ,2,3 ,4.
Sketch y[k], you may do it directely in fig. 2 of this sheet, if you want.

3.: You shall design a digital FIR notch filter having two poles and two zeros and
sampling frequency Fs = 60kHz. The notch frequency shall be fo = 10kHz, i.e., with an input
sequence which is sampled from an analog sine signal of frequency fo, no signal shall be
present at the notch filter's output.

3.1: Give the values of the poles and zeros, and sketch them into the z plane. Give the
transfer function H(z) in numerator and denominator polynomial form.

3.2: Using the "distance formula" , and employing simple geometry in the z plane, find the
value of the frequency response at DC, i.e., for f= O. Check this result with the equivalent
transfer function's value H(z), at z = 1.

3.3: Sketch the signal flow graph of this FlR filter.
