Hybrid Power plant Topologies

There are two main topologies that have gained traction in recent years. The first topology is to convert
each technology, wind, solar, and storage to a DC bus that is then converted back to AC when interfacing
with the grid. The second topology converts all technologies to AC and connects to an AC bus that
interfaces directly with the grid. The fundamental difference between wind and solar at the electrical
level in that wind inherently produces AC power, and solar/storage inherently produce DC power. This
provides many decisions to be made on the electrical infrastructure of combining these technologies
and has not been incorporated extensively in optimization studies

How GE solar-wind hybrid works

Here’s how it works: When Juhl rigged up his wind-solar combination 20 years ago, he had to include
circuitry — mainly convertors that modify direct-current voltage — to merge electrical current from the
wind turbines and the solar panels, which tend to have wide swings in voltage due to variability in the
amount of sunlight. GE designed a technology called WiSE, for Wind Integrated Solar Energy, expressly
for power plants that combine wind with solar. The team created a new interface that can
accommodate the direct current directly from solar panels without having to convert it first. The solar
panels plug directly into the DC circuitry of the turbines, reducing the equipment needed to integrate
solar and wind.

“With GE’s WiSE technology, we eliminated the need for a solar inverter by utilizing the wind turbine’s
convertor, so the solar plant routes [power] through the existing transformer, cabling and substation
that have been sized for the wind farm,” says explained Amelie Wulff, hybrid sales leader for GE
Renewable Energy. She said this set up was “an effective way to use the existing wind infrastructure
already in place, to generate firm energy production from solar at a very marginal incremental cost.”

Project by Juhl Energy

The project, developed and owned by Juhl Energy, is among the first of its kind in the country to pair
wind and solar on the same site. A 2-megawatt turbine and 500-kilowatt solar installation share an
inverter and grid connection, reducing equipment costs compared to two separate projects. The
innovative project utilizes GE's Wind Integrated Solar Energy (WiSE) technology platform - developed
through GE's Global Research Center - to directly integrate the solar panels through the wind turbine's
converter so both wind and solar share the same balance of plant, increasing system net capacity by 3-4
percent and annual energy production by up to 10 percent.

India’s Hybrid Policy

Energy storage may also be added to projects to further assist grid integration, increase energy output
at the delivery point and to ensure availability of power at certain time periods, which a key factors in
the government's focus on hybrids and storage. The project at Kavithal, Raichur District, which included
an existing 50MW wind farm, now has a neighbouring 28.8MW solar PV site to form a hybrid system.
The project’s evacuation capacity remains at 50MW since the primary aim is to address grid-integration
concerns around variable power coming from renewable energy. At Kavithal, both the wind and solar
plants were developed by Hero Future Energies and built by EPC contractor Siemens Gamesa.
The wind project uses Siemens Gamesa turbines and inverters, while the solar PV project uses Gamesa
inverters and 320/325W modules from China-based manufacturer Suntech. Cables came from
Hyderabad-based firm KEC International, and steel for mounting structures was sourced locally to Hero’s
specifications.

Wind Solar Hybrid Project by Vestas in Spain, Austrailia

The hybrid demonstrator is a combination of an existing Vestas V112-3.0 MW turbine and 372 kW of a
new solar photovoltaic. The PV power is fed to the turbine as direct current, which is then converted
and transformed by the turbine’s ad-hoc modified power conversion system in order to export the
power to the grid. According to the companies, by combining wind and PV, the demonstrator offers
increased capacity factor and annual energy production.
