MATHS 2007: Curtin University of Technology Department of Mathematics and Statistics

This document contains a mathematics test from Curtin University with 4 questions. It provides instructions to answer all questions, show workings, and includes spaces for the student's name, student number, and marks. Question 1 involves calculating the rate of change of a function. Question 2 involves calculating a double integral over a bounded region. Question 3 converts a triple integral into cylindrical coordinates. Question 4 evaluates another triple integral. The test also includes a part 2 for students to complete with their tutor, identifying any mistakes and planning for improvement, and describing an everyday object in spherical coordinates.

PART 1 MARK: PART 2 MARK:

1) Identify the mistakes (if any) in the test and state your plan to study efficiently for the unit
and for further improvement (1 mark) – complete after getting back the test.

2) Find an everyday object that you can describe (approximately) in spherical coordinates (it
must be something other than a sphere). Take measurements of it (and take a photo or draw a
picture, labelling your measurements to justify your approximations). Give the following:
(a) an approximate description of the region in spherical coordinates
(b) estimate the volume of the object.
