Question 1: Consider a function
f x, y, z 2e xy cos z .
Obtain the rate of change of the function at a point P 0,1, in the direction u [1,0,1] .
4
Obtain the unit vector in the direction which maximizes the rate of change.

Question 2: Calculate the double integral

where D is the region bounded A ( x, y) : 0 y 1, y x 1 . Sketch the region. Hint: you
need to integrate with respect to x last.

PART 2 – The test can be collected during the TUTORIALS the following week. You need
to complete this part and discuss it with your tutor.
1) Identify the mistakes (if any) in the test and state your plan to study efficiently for the unit
and for further improvement (1 mark) – complete after getting back the test.
2) Find an everyday object that you can describe (approximately) in spherical coordinates (it
must be something other than a sphere). Take measurements of it (and take a photo or draw a
picture, labelling your measurements to justify your approximations). Give the following:
(a) an approximate description of the region in spherical coordinates
(b) estimate the volume of the object.
