Question 1
0.25kg of air at a pressure of 140kPa occupies 0.15m3 and from this condition it is compressed
to 1.4MPa according to the law PV1.25 = C. Determine:
(a) the change in Internal Energy of the air
(b) the work done on or by the air
(c) the heat received or rejected by the air

Take Cp = 1.005kJ/kg.K; Cv = 0.718kJ/kg.K 15

Question 2
Air flows steadily at the rate of 0.4 kg/s through an air compressor, entering the compressor at 6
m/s with a pressure of 1 bar and a specific volume of 0.8 m3/kg and leaves at 4.5 m/s with a
pressure of 6.9 bars and a specific volume of 0.16 m3/kg. The internal energy of the air leaving
is 88 kJ/kg greater than that of air entering. If the Cooling water in a jacket surrounding the
cylinder absorbs heat from the air at the rate of 59 kJ/s, calculate the power required to drive the
compressor. 10

Question 3
A quantity of gas with a volume of 0.2m3 at a pressure of 1000 kPa and a temperature
of 3480C is first heated at constant volume to a pressure of 4000 kPa and then expanded
polytropically (n=1.3) to a pressure of 280kPa. Gamma for the gas is 1.41 and R is 0.288
kJ/kg.K. Draw the completed PV-diagram and then calculate the total change in entropy
in kJ/K. 10

Question 4
In an ideal Diesel cycle the volume ratios of the adiabatic expansion and compression are 7.5:1
and 15:1 respectively. The pressure and temperature at the beginning of compression are 98kPa
and 440C, respectively. The pressure at the end of the adiabatic expansion is 258kPa. Taking
Cp=1.004kJ/kg.K and gamma = 1.4, determine for 1kg mass:
12
1.1 The pressure, volume and temperature at the four cycle points
6
1.2. The work done per kilogram of gas
3
1.3 The thermal efficiency
2
1.4 The work ratio
2
1.5 The mean effective pressure
3
1.6 The Carnot efficiency
