Q.1. What do you mean by kinematic synthesis of linkages? Give some of the important
techniques of kinematic synthesis.
Q.2. What is the need of dynamic force and motion analysis of plane mechanism.
Q.3. State and Explain D’ Alembert’s principle.
Q.4. Discuss analytical method of calculating piston displacement, velocity and accelerations as
applied to dynamics of a reciprocating engine mechanism.
Q.5. For a reciprocating engine, derive the expression for angular velocity and angular
acceleration of the connecting rod.
Q.6. In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the crank and connecting rod are 150 mm and
600 mm respectively. The crank position is 60º from inner dead centre. The crank shaft speed is
450 rpm (clockwise). Using analytical method, determine:
i. Velocity and acceleration of the slider
ii. Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod.

Q.1. Write the function of cam and follower Mechanism. Also classify the cam and follower with
Sketches.
Q.2. Sketches the terminology of a cam and follower mechanism. Also define the common terms
like Base circle, Pitch circle, Pressure angle, Trace point, Prime circle, Lift or Stroke etc.
Q.3. Draw the displacement, Velocity and Acceleration diagram for the follower when it moves
with simple harmonic motion. Derive the expression for the velocity and acceleration during
outstroke and return stroke of the follower.
Q.4. Draw the profile of a cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the following
data:
a) Minimum radius of cam is 25 mm
b) Lift of follower is 30 mm
c) Roller diameter is 15 mm
The cam lifts the follower for 120º with simple harmonic motion followed by a dwell
period of 30º. Then the follower lowers down during 150º of the cam rotation with uniform
acceleration and deceleration followed by a dwell period. If the cam rotates at a uniform speed of
150 rpm. Determine maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during the descent
period.
Q.5. The following data relate to a profile in which the follower moves with uniform acceleration
and deceleration during outstroke and return stroke:
Minimum radius of cam = 25 mm
Roller diameter = 7.5 mm
Offset of the follower axis = 12 mm
Stroke = 28 mm
Angle of outstroke = 60º
Angle of return stroke = 90º
Angle of dwell after outstroke = 45º
Speed of cam = 200 rpm
Draw the profile of the cam and determine the maximum velocity and uniform acceleration
of the follower during the outstroke and return stroke.

I. Follower to move out words through 3 cm with SHM during 160º of cam rotation
II. Dwell for 20º
III. Return with SHM in 160º

The cam rotates with 1200 rpm clockwise. The follower is offset 0.75 cm towards the left.
Roller diameter is 1 cm; base circle diameter is 4 cm. calculate the velocity and acceleration
during the outstroke of the follower, when the cam rotates at 100 rpm.

Q.2. Derive the condition for transmitting maximum power in a flat belt drive.
Q.3. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 120 cm and 50 cm diameters, on parallel shaft 4 m
apart the maximum tension in the belt is 1855.3 N. the coefficient of friction is 0.3. the driver
pulley of diameter 120 cm runs at 200 rpm. Calculate-
i. The power transmitted
ii. Torque on each of the two shafts.
Q.4. determine the maximum power that can be transmitted through a flat belt drive having the
cross-sectional area of the belt is 300 mm X 12 mm. Ratio of friction tensions is 2.2. Maximum
permissible tension in the belt is 2 Mpa. The density of belt material is 1100 kg/m3.
Q.5. A single plate clutch, effective on both sides, is transmit 25 KW at 3000 rpm. Determine the
outer and inner radii of frictional surface if the coefficient of friction is 0.225, the ratio of radii is
1.25 and the maximum pressure is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm 2. Also determine the axial thrust to be
provided by spring. Assume the theory of uniform wear.
Q.6. An engine developing 45 KW at 1000 rpm is fitted with a cone clutch built inside the
flywheel. The cone has a face angle of 12.5º and maximum mean diameter of 500 mm. The
coefficient of friction is 0.2. The normal pressure on the clutch face is not to exceed 0.1 N/mm 2.
Determine: (i) the axial spring force necessary to clutch (ii) the face width required.
Q.7. A differential bend brake has an angle of contact is 225º. The band has a compressed woven
lining and bears against a cast iron drum of 350 mm diameter. The brake to sustain a torque of
350 N-m and the coefficient of friction between the band and the drum is 0.3. Find the necessary
force (P) for the clockwise and anticlockwise rotation of the drum.

iii. State and prove law of gearing
iv. Difference between involute and cycloidal tooth profile
v. Derive expression of length of path of contact, length of arc of contact, contact ratio
vi. Interference in involute gears
vii. Minimum number of teeth on the gear wheel and the pinion to avoid interference

Q.2. Two 20º involute spur gears have module 8 mm. gear ratio 2.5, speed of gear wheel
120 rpm, number of teeth on gear wheel 80. The addendum is such that the path of approach and
path of recess on each side are 40% of maximum possible length each. Determine the addendum
for pinion and the wheel. Also determine the length of arc of contact & contact ratio.

Q.4. An epicyclic gear train is composed of a fixed annular wheel A having 150 teeth. The wheel
A is meshing with wheel B which drives wheel D through an idler wheel C, D being concentric
with A. The wheels B and C are carried on an arm which revolves at 100 rpm about the axis of A
and D. If the wheels B and D have 25 teeth and 40 teeth respectively, find the number of teeth on
C and speed and sense of rotation of C.
Q.5. Four masses A, B, C and D carried by a rotating shaft at radii 80 mm, 100 mm, 160 mm,
and 120 mm respectively are completely balanced. Masses B, C and D are 8 kg, 4 kg and 3 kg
respectively. Determine the mass A and the relative angular positions of the four masses if the
planes are spaced 500 mm apart.
