E-Log-inator: The Automated Log Book System with the use of Quick Response (QR)
Code

Introduction
As we welcome the new decade, the birth of the nightmare that made a huge impact in our
country haunted us. It was January 30, 2020, the exact date where COVID 19 finally conquered
Philippines’ immune system. Followed by March 7, 2020 as the first local transmission was reported. No
one was able to predict that an infection through an individual would cost us for almost a year of
lockdown. Now that we embraced the new normal that the COVID 19 outbreak taught us, many unique
ways emerged that made an impact to us individuals and created a mark in our country’s history. This
new normal aims to lessen the contact within humans in order to prevent the spread of infection. It is
indeed difficult to adjust not only in our mode of learning but also making it a habit for us to lessen the
contacts from the people around us. For sure, this new normal will be the new story of what lies ahead of
our country and even if COVID-19 will be eradicated, this would be the new normal of our living.

One of the new normal that made an appearance this year is the logbook that most of the
establishments implemented nowadays. The purpose of the logbook is in order to identify those people
who enter certain areas. This will be helpful for contact tracing whenever there is a person who was
infected by COVID 19 and was able to go into that place. Most of the logbooks that are implemented
today still needs to write your name, address and even your contact number which will be helpful for
contact tracing. However, one of the main concerns is the process in filling up the logbook, where you
still need to write the information needed. In case you don’t have a pen for you to write, there is an
available our there for sure. But this would expose you to the virus because the pen was for public use;
many people already used the pen not just a while ago or maybe even yesterday or the other day. More so,
it is also time-consuming for you to write and fill up most especially for those with poor eyesight, the
elderly and the person with disability. It would be difficult for them to read the needed information and
write their answers.

Thus, this project aims to contribute to the new normal that our country is embracing nowadays.
Furthermore, it sought to focus on the concern of answering the logbook and gathering the data needed
that could help in contract tracing. Instead of borrowing a pen or bringing your own pen for you to write
all of the information needed, this would be done in just one tap away. Through a QR Code that will be
given to the users or people as they register and created their account in our website, this will serve as
their Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) in order for them to enter the establishment. Meanwhile, the
information will be placed in a digital logbook where the security guards and administration can be able
to review and check the list of persons who scanned their QR Code and entered the building. Then, there
will be an update on the accounts of the users where they can check a digital logbook that contains the
areas where they went and used their QR Codes. Through this project, it would be easy for the
administration to gather the information for contact tracing and this would not take more time in
answering the normal logbook. For the users, they will be aware and updated on the places where they
went and when they went. This can be the new way of having a logbook that is indeed helpful and needed
during this pandemic where the paper and pen will finally be replaced by technology.

Need for this Study

As of October 12, 2020, a total of 342,816 COVID-19 cases were reported while 43,332 are still
active cases here in the Philippines. One of our main goals nowadays is to flatten the curve of positive
cases and stop the virus from spreading continuously within and among the community. It is believed that
prevention is better than cure, thus, whenever there is a new positive patient, contact tracing is needed in
order to lessen the spread of the disease. This project would greatly help in the field of new way of
logging-in and contact tracing most specifically in the CpE Department. If online classes will be lifted
and face-to-face classes will resume, CpE Department will also embrace the new normal. Knowing that
there are CpE Laboratory and Cpe Department rooms, this could help to monitor the students or
professors who are entering these rooms. More so, this could also contribute in the prevention of the
disease because of the new way of logging in before entering such rooms around the CpE Department and
having a digitalized logbook that could be useful for tracking down not only COVID-19 positive patients
but also Person Under Investigation.

Objectives
This project seeks to achieve its general objective of creating a new way of logbook with the use
of QR Code that is also for contact tracing by focusing on the following objectives:
1. To create a new preventive measure in order to impede the spreading of COVID-19 through
focusing on contact tracing.
2. To determine the influence of using RFID and QR Code Scanner as the mode of logging in
specifically in the CpE Department.
3. To identify the impact of utilizing RFID and digitalized logbook as instrument for contact tracing.
4. To assess the effectiveness of having RFID and digitalized logbook for contact tracing.
Research Questions
This project sought to give a new solution for logging-in whenever entering establishments and for
contact tracing that is essential in our situation nowadays by focusing on the following questions:
1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of RFID and QR Code Scanner when used as
instruments in logging-in?
2. How do RFID and digitalized logbook affects and helps the contact tracing for COVID-19
positive patients or Person Under Investigation?

Methodology
a. Website
 The proponents of this project will create and provide a website wherein the students and
administration or professors can register and create their accounts. Personal information
especially those needed for contact tracing will be asked during the registration. After the
students register, they will be receiving their QR Code that will serve as their CpE Pass. In
their accounts, it will contain a digitalized logbook that reminds them where they tapped or
used their QR Code. This will also give them an update or remind them where they went
around in CpE main rooms. Furthermore, the administration will create their account where it
will contain the digitalized logbook in every place where there is QR Code Scanner available.
This can be placed in CpE Laboratory or CpE Department and it will automatically update
their digitalized logbook containing the name, student number, Gmail account and contact
number of the students who entered and scanned their QR Codes.

b. QR Code Scanner
 The proponents of this project will create a hardware that contains the installed software
about the scanning of QR Code of the students. The software will be created through VHDL
software specifically ModelSim which will be utilized in this subject. More so, the
proponents are looking forward into the materials that will be used as well as the way on how
they will program the code for the QR Code Scanner.

Scope and Limitation

This study aims to give access to the website and QR Codes for the students from BS CpE 3-1
who will test the E-Log-inator (website and QR Code Scanner) and a selected professor will serve as the
administration who will also check the digitalized logbook in the account of admin.
