Lesson 7
Activity 1:
Welcome to Lesson 7! We’ll spend about 15 minutes learning about a sport, and the rest of the session
playing the sport as part of your physical fitness routine.
VOLLEYBALL
BASIC SKILLS
2. Digging – is a pass from a hard-driven ball from the other team or a pass used to defend an offensive
shot.
3. Serving – the first contact that starts every rally. A properly executed serve provides the serving team
with a significant advantage over the receiving
team. A serve that is properly placed can cause
players on the receiving team to get out of
position or attempt awkward returns. The server
must stand behind the service line at the end of
the court.
5. Setting – tactical placing of the ball in preparation for an attack. Setting, or overhead passing,
typically is the second shot in a threeshot sequence. A properly executed set is placed close and
above the net. You want to place the ball about four feet from the net so on the third shot, typically a
spike, your teammate will not hit the net on her follow through.
Know that you may play as scheduled in your classlist, or you may play in your free time or during the
weekend.
Safety first: If you have a medical condition that limits your physical activity, please let your teacher know at
once. If you’re injured or not feeling well, postpone playing your sport to another day.
