MODULES FOR RIZAL LIFE WORKS AND WRITINGS


(RLWW)

Description of the Course:

This course covers Rizal’s childhood up to his death, from his


biographical sketch, childhood memories, Ateneo days, life abroad,
deportation to Dapitan, his arrest up to his execution at Bagumbayan
Field, now called Rizal Park.
His famous works Noli Me Tangere (Social Cancer) and El
Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed) were outstanding that brought
about enlightenment among educated and well-read Filipino during his
time.
His immortal novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo will be
the focus of intelligent discussion at the later part of the term but his
other popular works will also touched for aesthetic purposes and ‘love of
country’ as themes. A writer said Rizal has been exemplary model for
government officials as incorruptible and courageous individual. It is
without doubt that Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal is worthy to be our national
hero.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course, the learners would be able to:


1. Read Rizal’s My Last Farewell as a his tribute to the Philippines,
showing his sincerest example for “love of country,” one of the
missions of The University of Manila.
2. Trace the growth of the boy Rizal, from his childhood memories.
3. See the strong character of Rizal while he was studying in Ateneo
and The University of Sto. Tomas, where he experienced bias and
discrimination ,common during the Spanish times. (Even a well-to-
do-Filipinos were not spared.)
4. Note down major events in Rizal’s life while he was in Paris,
Germany, Hong Kong, London, and Madrid showing his love of
country.
5. Rizal’s practice of Multiple Intelligence (by Howard Gardner 1983,)
while was deported in Dapitan.
6. Support the idea that Rizal’s last Farewell is the “Swan Song” of the
century.
7. Explain the significance of the publication of 2 Novels-Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
8. Give a firm stand on “Rizal’s Retraction, using different sources and
references.

Module III: RIZAL’S DEPORTATION IN DAPITAN
Lesson 10 Reasons for Rizal’s arrest.
Lesson 11 Rizal‘s love life, Josephine Bracken
Lesson 12 Rizal as Physician, Educator, Engineer, Scientist, Farmer,
Entrepreneur, Inventor, Artist, Linguist, and Musician, etc.

Module I: RIZAL’S EARLY LIFE

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
At the end of the module students would:
1. Find out significant events in Rizal’s life as a boy.
2. Trace the reasons why Rizal has started to develop “character’ while still

3. Do you think these injustices contribute to his character? Why? Why not?
YES, just like rizal said “He awakened my intellect and made me
understand goodness and justice.” Rizal realized the unfairness of justice in
the Philippines.

Task 5:
1. Describe Rizal’s life in Ateneo?
When the School year 1871 – 1872 opened in June Rizal first day is full of
excitement just like any other neophytes He was dressed in coat and tie, He went
to the school chapel to hear mass and prayed fervently to God for guidance. His
first professor in the Ateneo was Father Jose Bech. Two empires established to
stimulate the students a Roman empire and a Greek empire Constantly at war for
supremacy in the class whose leading posts are won by means of challenges
which are successful if the opponent committed three mistake, Unlucky Rizal was
placed at the tail – end of the line because he was a newcomer and knew little
Spanish so he decides that after he spent noon recesses in Sta.Isabel college
where he spent 3 pesos for Spanish lesson after a week he improved his class
standing and after a month he was a emperor because he was a brightness in the
class. Because of Excellent performance he was awarded a saint picture as his
prize and this the time that he write “My First Inspiration.” That express of Good
wishes which was full of endearing final affection on his mother’s birthday and He
knew How to make a Sculpture and Rizal impressed his professors and Classmates
When He curved the image of the virgin Mary on piece of Philippine Hardwood .
2. How was his life in The University of Sto.Tomas?
Rizal start Studying in Sto. Tomas in the school year of 1878-1879 Rizal Take a
medical course because he wanted to be a physician so that he could look after
her mother’s failing eyesight, The academic climate at the university of
Sto.Tomas was quite different from the Ateneo because of Dominican
Professor seemed hostile to him because this Dominican Professor insulted
student and mockingly called them “Indio” because of his unfriendly
professors Rizal virtually failed to maintain high scholastic honors while some
of his scholastic grades in medical education were not excellent however they
were all passing after five years in Sto.Tomas Rizal decided to quit and
continued his medical course in abroad.
