Q1: Computer Operations and Internet Navigations (COIN)

Title: Computer Systems: Hardware, Software, Peopleware
Introduction:
A Personal Computer (PC) is composed of three major components: hardware, software
and peopleware. The three components depend and interact with each other to make a PC
system function optimally. Computer hardware needs computer software and vice versa to
operate. Computer hardware and computer software need peopleware to perform their
respective tasks efficiently.

Objectives:

1. Define what a hardware is

2. Identify the names and distinguishing features of different kinds of input and
output devices.
3. Define what a software is
4. Distinguish between Operating Systems software and Application Systems software.
5. Define what peopleware is

Keep This In Mind

Hardware – refers to the physical and tangible parts of the computer system. Any PC
component that can be seen and touched is hardware.

1. Input Devices – components of hardware that are used to send data and manage
signals from the computer.

• Keyboard – the most commonly used input device.

It is divided into four (4) parts; the alphanumeric
pad which is based on a typewriter, the numeric
keypad (numpad), the function keys, and the special
keys.

Q1: Computer Operations and Internet Navigations (COIN)
• Mouse – controls an on-screen pointer, called the
cursor, that normally looks like an arrow.

• Joystick – commonly used for playing games on the

computer.

• Headset – composed of an earphone and a microphone and

contains voice-recognition software.

• Scanner – is like a photocopier. Place the

document to be copied on the surface of the
scanner and then activate it. A digital image
of the document is produced that can be saved
in the in the computer’s memory.

• Cameras – the best way to enter a lot of graphic

information into a computer at one time.

2. Output Devices – are used to receive the output of processed data. The output
could be a picture displayed on the screen, printed document or a song played.

• Monitor – also called the computer screen or

display. It is the standard output device that
vary in size and type.

• Projector – transfers the display of a

monitor onto a flat surface to show a larger
version of it.

• Speakers – output devices connected to a

computer’s sound card that produces sounds.

• Printer – a machine used to transfer text

or images onto paper.

Software – is a general term for well-ordered collections of computer instructions and

data. It is often divided into two major types: system software and application
software.

1. System Software – performs the basic non-task-specific functions of the

computer.

2. Application Software – used to accomplish specific tasks.

Peopleware – pertains to anything that has to do with the role of people in the
development or application of the computer.
