General Mathematics (MTH100) : Assignment # 01

The document contains two math assignment questions. For question 1, the student determines that since the quadratic equation has one real solution, the discriminant must equal 0. Setting the discriminant equal to 0 and solving, the student finds that t can be either 6 or -6. For question 2, the student applies the specified row operations to the given matrix: R2 + 6R3, then R3 / 4. This transforms the matrix as shown.

The equation 9 x 2−tx+1=0 has exactly one real solutions. What can be deduced about the
value of t?

Answer:

The discriminant of the quadratic equation (b2−4ac) can be used to determine the number and the
type of solutions. Since a quadratic equation’s roots are in fact its x intercepts, and a perfect
square trinomial will have 2 equal, or 1 distinct solution, the vertex lies on the x axis. We can set
the discriminant to 0 and solve:

t 2−4 ( 9 ) (1)=0 since a = 9, b=t, c=1

2
t −45=0
t 2=36
t=± 6
So, t can either be 6 or -6

Given a matrix

2 4 2 8

Apply the following row operations

[ 2 6 0 −2
−3 5 −4 1 ]
R2+6R3
R3/4

Answer:

Applying first operation on R2 by adding with 6R3

2 4 2 8

[ 2+6(−3) 6+6(5) 0+6(−4) −2+6(1)

−3 5 −4 1 ] R2+6R3
2 4 2 8

[ −16 36 −24 4
−3 5 −4 1 ] R2+6R3

Now, applying second operation on R3 by dividing by 4

2 4 2 8

[ −16 36 −24 4
−3/4 5 /4 −4 /4 1 /4 ] R3/4

2 4 2 8

[ −16 36 −24 4
−0.75 1.25 −1 0.25 ] R3/4
