Jaypee University of Engineering & Technology: Signals and Systems (18B11EC312) Tutorial Sheet - 1

This document provides problems related to signals and systems for students to practice. It includes problems drawing step signals and shifted versions of sample discrete and continuous time signals. It also includes problems calculating new signals based on existing signal definitions through addition, multiplication, and other operations.

Tutorial Sheet -1

1. Draw the waveforms represented by the following step signals:

(i) 𝑓1 𝑡 = 2𝑢(𝑡 − 1) (ii) 𝑓2 𝑡 = −2𝑢(𝑡 − 2)
(iii) 𝑓 𝑡 = 𝑓1 𝑡 + 𝑓2 (𝑡) (iv) 𝑓 𝑡 = 𝑓1 𝑡 − 𝑓2 (𝑡)
2. A discrete time signal is shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 1

Sketch the following

(i) 𝑥[𝑛 − 3] (ii) 𝑥[3 − 𝑛] (iii) 𝑥[2𝑛]
3. Sketch 𝑥 𝑡 = 𝑢 𝑡 + 𝑟 𝑡 − 1 − 2𝑢 𝑡 − 3 . 𝑢(−𝑡 + 5)
4. A discrete time signal is given by 𝑥 𝑛 = [1, 1, 1, 1, 2]

Sketch the following signals

(i) 𝑥[𝑛 − 2] (ii) 𝑥[𝑛 + 1] (iii) 𝑥[3 − 𝑛]

(iv) 𝑥 𝑛 . 𝑢[𝑛 − 1] (v) 𝑥 𝑛 − 1 . 𝛿[𝑛 − 1]

5. Sketch the discrete time signal 𝑥 𝑛 = 2−𝑛 for − 2 ≤ n ≤ 2 and obtain

(i) 𝑦1 𝑛 = 2𝑥 𝑛 + 𝛿[𝑛]
(ii) 𝑦2 𝑛 = 𝑥 𝑛 . 𝑢[2 − 𝑛]
6. Plot the following signal with respect to time
𝑥 𝑡 = 𝑢 𝑡 − 𝑟 𝑡 − 1 + 2𝑟 𝑡 − 2 − 𝑟 𝑡 − 3 + 𝑢 𝑡 − 4 − 2𝑢(𝑡 − 5)
7. A discrete time signal is given by 𝑥 𝑛 = [3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3]

Determine 𝑦 𝑛 = 𝑥 𝑛 − 1 + 𝑥 𝑛 − 𝑥[𝑛 + 1]
